Here is a thread from a couple months ago to hold you over. Too bad people don't keep their photobuckets up :(

Beautiful, how long does it take to get that big? I heard they are slow growers.

Your setup sound sweet. What bulb? 20k? Got a FTS?

SolidDetail, that is the nicest Purple Monster I've ever seen! That's the best color I've seen on one of those. Mine is a bit browned/bleached but per Chris' recommendation, I've moved it to higher light and more flow.

SolidDetail808: Sure looks like it is encrusting nicely! Great color.

what's the difference from tyree's and eddies"

The eddies is a lokani, and will have thinner branches than the original. The original is widely accepted to be a valida.

How much flow are you guys giving the PM?

mpoletti
03/06/2009, 01:51 PM
It likes as much as you can give it. As they get bigger, they need a lot. There are many stories where when they get larger, they begin to STN in the middle as they can not get enough flow :(

I got this from a buddy when he got out of the hobby. I took some pics when my buddy just got it almost 2 years ago, when it was a tiny 1 branch frag. I need to find it. Actually the pic was taken under a 20K 400w Reeflux I'm trying out.

I have mine mid tank in moderate flow. For me it didn't like high light.

Here is a growth comparison.
Dec 07 (when I took pics of my buddies tank)

Feb 09 (I've had it about 4-6 months now haven't noticed much growth)

I like the metallic blue sheen on your PM. Mine is only encrusting at the moment. Has it been under the same 20K 400w Radium bulb since Dec 07? I recently swapped out a bulb for a blue-er look and my PM looks like yours from Dec 07.

The Dec 07 pics was taken under 14k phoenixs the Feb 09 was taken under a 20k reeflux. I've had it under the radiums for about 4-6 months. I switched bulbs less than a months ago. The radiums were due and I opted for a bulb that was less blue with more par.

I got lucky with mine. I got the whole mini colony for $200. Maybe in 3 years I can frag and make my money back...LOL ;-)

SolidDetail808 - Surprised no one has said anything yet, but IMHO opinion your mini colony does not look to me like a true PM. The corallites don't look quite right. The spacing and branching don't look like any I have seen with true PM. Also, what color are your polyps when fully extended? True PM has nice bright white polyps. I see a trace with yours, but mostly brown.

There have been a number of imports that come close in resemblence to true PM and yours looks to me like one of those.

A nice coral none the less.

From the person who I bought it from he said it was a PM. I have nothing else to go by other than what the previous owner said.
