I do, but we don't use them as the tank is in our bedroom and the wife didn't like all the light :).

You know, you and I need to go "find" those various people on RC who we know have some tiny galaxy palys, yet who are not posting their pics here in this thread. Perhaps they've not seen it yet.
Or perhaps they're being lax.
Perhaps we need to send our cousin Vinny to visit those folks.

Let's do this, you pm those that you know, and i'll haras..I mean pm the ones I know that have them. (I'll even pm those who I don't know who have them), and hopefully together we'll rustle them up to post those pics we know they have.

So that they'll be even MORE tiny universes.

Yes, picture naming. That's important stuff, and every image I post has a name that matches the subject. Get with it if you hope to survive on this site. :p

I'll be at MAX this weekend, and MARS in about six weeks. Then MACNA in September. See you at once of those, perhaps?

I don't know but remember when you asked me if I wanted candy last night? I think your avatar reminds me maybe of "candy apple pinks" now. Which is a palythoa name by the way.

...it also reminds me when I used to make candy apples.
Not carmel apples. Candy apples are made with red hot candy covering them.
Red hot candy covered apples are so good don't you think?

ksanmamaril, I just saw what you wrote, lol. I know right? Me too. :eek1:

Okay....it's no longer April Fool's Day (for some people.) :p
So shall we have some more photos of these tiny galaxy palys?
More camera photos? Phone pics?
All actinic shots, no actinic shots, colonies, single polyps.
More macro shots? Further away shots?
Old pics, new pics... or just plain more pics.
Can you tell i'm hooked on the tiny space faces of these?

Also please, any husbandry hints or tips from anyone regarding growing these palys would be appreciated.
Feeding?
Is there a difference in lighting perhaps with regard to keeping these or is that just a noob (me) assuming stuff.

Thanks all. :)

Flyyy you have the best photos. I know this probably isn't the first time anyone has asked this,so please excuse me, =) but what type of camera & lens are you using?

flyyyguy
04/06/2009, 08:47 PM
Fish taco. thank you for the kind words.

I have a older d-100 and a d-80. most pics are with a tamron 90 mm. lens. I upgraded to the d-80 last fall. I did it thinking I didnt want to buy a new macro lens, and the increase in pixels would help as that is the only real upgrade the d80 gave me. It might be that I dont know how to use it, but I honestly cant tell the difference between the two cameras. I should have saved my money and saved up for the new canon and new macro lens I really want. lol

if you look really close lots of polyps have "sparkles" in them.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h181/flyyyguy/ZOAS%20and%20PALYS/bpe.jpg

interesting thing about these, is I believe the same polyp was posted on the first page of this thread with much, much more pronounced sparkles. These polyps have morphed all over the place for me, I hope they will at some point get those sparkles I saw

ok lily...heres yet another. I took this pic this morning having the conversation of why speckled rpe's are very much a different polyp than magicians, and not simply a environmentally induced morph.

They are certainly bleached, but pretty sweet I think all the same

Wow...princer and 808, thanks so much for posting yours. They're both stunning.

You know, I can't think of one single thing, that grows, aside from an actual galaxy, that has a pattern like these.
Can you all think of anything?
Flowers? They're some pretty flowers in the world but no, no galaxy looking flowers that i'm aware of.
Gems or precious stones? They're definitely sparkly and pretty, yet not really of the "Tiny Universe" design.

I think Mr. Apsley would agree, these all are very special in that regard. :)
And i think he would also agree that we need more photos.

not magicians...speckled RPE's as are parios hiltons (which look fantastic by the way). At a distance they look similar to magicians, but there are clear differences in color and potential color of the faces and the color of the spackles is completely different in any condition

I only bring it up for conversation purposes as well as I have not seen magicians since I lost mine.

Anybody who has them has some serious bartering material to get their hands in my tank

http://www.exoticfrags.us/corals.php?s=21&c=230

they are calling them a magician morph which I would of course disagree with. :) I dont think very many people have actually seen the magicians in person.

What sets them apart and makes them truly special IMO, is that the spackles besdies being a different structure, are neon green, the exact same color as the mouth, whereas the speckled rpes are a light bluish colro fo spackles. this cannot be morphed based on environment

you can note it here.

Thank you! Very helpful!

However, I am curious about your statements, for this reason...

When I first recieved my polyps (ordered them from an online vendor under the name "magicians palys"), they appeared as the ones in your link to coralpedia. Over time they changed into what you see in my picture.

I had always attributed this to an acclimation of sorts. They came from a system which utilized 2 400w MHs and went into my system which was deep and only running a single 250w MH. In other words, they did change from a condensed spackled pattern to the spread-out spackled pattern over time. When the pattern was condensed it was flourescent green.

I thought nothing of it because of my experience with other corals. For instance, my green nephthea condenses itself at times and is extremely bright green, glowing. But when it is opened it is not nearly as flourescent.

Could it be that the lighting may have this effect on the "magician" palys as well? Or, are you certain that this is, in fact, a different polyp? And if so, how are you certain?

Not that it matters to me; I like them all, but I find this to be an interesting topic, and I enjoy learning.

Thanks.

I am certain, as well as the only way I could be certain is having both polyps long enough to see how they behave. I do agree with you that when more condensed the speckles on the speckled rpes's can look a little greenish in comparison to the blue they show for most, but it is not at all the same flourescent green that straight up matches the mouth color of all zoanthus gigantus.

Any given polyp can morph so dramatically from tank to tank that it is very difficult to tell these things apart at times as well as mistakenly think a polyp is unique when it is the same old polyp everybody has that has morphed, and the first step to really being able to distinguish one polyp from another, is understanding, as well as witnessing first hand, what can, and cannot be environmentally morphed.

It doesnt mean that one polyp is nicer than the other, and I imagine to many reading this it is pretty much a stupid conversation.....lol......but it just makes them clearly different and if you are into collecting as many unique and interesting polyps as you can get your hands on, it can make one that is hard to find much more desirable than the other as you want it in your collection, regardless if it is actually nicer or not.

Yeah, I see what you're saying; and I agree completely. It takes an experienced eye to be able to tell the subtle differences.

I do not have the experience, nor would I claim to. As mentioned, I collect them all. I don't care if it's a $10 frag or a $100 collector frag, if it looks interesting to me, and I can afford it, I'll get it!

My favorite zoas, aside from my speckled RPEs, cost me a whopping $12 and they remain my 2nd favs to this day... Dunno what they are called:

http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq323/joshnola/zoas6.jpg

Anyway, thanks for the link and the info. I appreciate it. And hey, I know this isn't the forum for it, but if you have any interesting frags you want to sell, shoot me a message. I just passed a semester of nursing school and I'm looking to reward myself! haha, Take it easy!

Those are slightly bleached out horizons. Looking their best you can get a fairly deep red skirt and a deep peach face :) Actual;ly one of those very common polyps that most lfs have for cheap when they come in, and it can be a knockout in the right conditions. Sunbursts are another super common knockout........as well as one I havent posted yet for Lily's little galaxy fetish.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h181/flyyyguy/ZOAS%20and%20PALYS/sunbursts-1.jpg

im digging through old pics now........how about a galaxy of one?? Incidentally this falls great under the morph category........I have it labeled as a solar, but only becasue I didnt know any better at the time. It IS a sunburst that I pictured above ;)

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h181/flyyyguy/ZOAS%20and%20PALYS/DSC_6773.jpg

here is another galaxy I just came across, although dont ask me what I was smoking when I took as well as post processed this pic............it is so bad I dont even know what it is nor do I remember owning it

How can the color be brought out best?

in the case of both those horizons and the sunbursts, it takes strong lighting to make those skirts pop which is what really makes them both. But it takes time if you are picking them up from your lfs or someone with weak lights. If you do it too fast and bleach them it can take months sometimes to get it back.

Oh, those are crazy colored tiny galaxies aren't they!? :inlove:
Do you attribute the differences between them to lighting mostly, or other things, or both?

IridescentLily
05/19/2009, 10:28 PM
I have a question for anyone; do their sparkly little faces stay the same no matter what kind of lighting (high or low) one uses? Do their faces eventually change to one solid color?

I'm also bumping this for anyone to add pics of their sparkly polyps if they wish to.

Lastly, i've asked a couple of other folks to post their lovely sparklies here so more should be coming.

Thanks all. :-)

C4DC - Awesome pictures! What camera do you have, and what lighting were those under?

It's all in the lens. 100mm f2.8 macro (Canon) with Rebel XSI body, but any digital SLR with this lens will pretty much do the same. Lighting at the time was from a Current 4 bulb T5 fixture with 2 Geismann actinic+ and 2 aquablue.

The main points to getting good pics are: Tripod (a must), play with apeture priority settings with no flash, white balance to cloudy or shade if no custom settings, and cropping/expanding on the computer.

I think these palys needed more light than they were getting back then (hence the color) but you can see the sparklys in them, even from the bad angle-
