my derasa clam seems like he is not doing so hot the past couple of days. he is not overlapping his shell anymore and seems to be gapping. when i look in his "mouth" i can see through the bottom side of his shell (where both shells meet). i have 125 gallon tank and he is placed in the middle. i just changed my lights 2 wks ago (175 w 400k). i am not sure what could be causing this, nothing in the tank is bothering him he just has not looked very good over the past couple of days. any suggestions?

A sudden change of lighting could definitely trigger this sort of response. Try raising the light, putting the clam in the shade, or putting a screen over the tank.

I recently set this tank up about 2 months ago and have had the clam for about 6 months prior in my 40 gallon. the lights that came in the 120 gallon were about 1 yr old (also 120 w 400K) and looking dim so i replaced them about 2 wks ago. it has looked fine until just about 2-3 days ago. nothing drastic has happened as far as i know he just is not looking good all of a sudden. all my levels have been the same and nothing has been messing with it. my filtration is through a sump with carbon filter and bio-balls, marineland 300 in sump protein skimmer. Everything else is doing fine just this recent decline is the clam's health is confusing me. the only thing i could think of is maybe the new lights are too much but i have read that they like a lot of light but i could be wrong, not an expert.

Clams can be sensitive to sudden light changes, it usually takes time to show you the effects.

Ok I admit I don't know much about lighting but what is 400K? Is that the kelvin rating? I thought it only went as high as 20,000K and as low as about 5500K? If the bulb is talking of 400 Kelvin rating wouldn't that be a really reddish bulb? I understood that people don't typically go with lower K bulbs in SW?

New tank syndrome?
