Im not an expert in the field but I have recently used a ceramic reef rock (live rock substitute that functions like live rock) that is affordable and looks real great and seems to work.. Im growin corralline on my stuff in a couple of months. I got some custom shapes but the bulk vida rock looks real good to. Its called vidarock made by cerameco in the usa.

That looks like something worth trying. I'm gonna order a small piece to add to my tank and see how it does.
