does it matter what kind of carbon, if it says fresh water carbon or something else, isn't all carbon the same

IMO, you need to be careful about activated carbon in your tank. Some carbons are known to leach phosphate into the water.

I use BRS for Carbon with no problems as well

Make sure you get the largest grain possible from BRS. I ordered medium and it was too fine IMO. It took about 20 gallons of water before my carbon reactors water cleared up. BTW, make sure to rinse all carbon w/ rodi before use
