View Full Version : Hardened Salt in Bucket ... ?

Does salt go bad? I had a bucket of salt that I opened awhile back, and the salt was loose. I just opened it back up to start mixing for a water change and the whole thing has solidified. It can be scraped pretty easily ... but I just thought it was odd that it hardened up like that. The top was on tight, and the rubber gasket looks intact.

Has anyone used salt in this state?

It can probably be used just fine. Once it is dissolved, just check that the alkalinity has not dropped too much, adjust if necessary, and it should be good to go. :)

the smallest amount of moisture can do this. either some got in when you where using it or the gasket doesnt seal propperly. also try and store your salt in a cool DRY place . not like a basment or garage. the place that you store your salt helps keep it from getting like this...when the salt gets like that it takes longer to dissolve. when i use IO when it gets like that it leaves little white salt specks in the tank for an hour or so then it dissolves away . doesnt seem to poss any ill effect to the tank.

where was it stored? if it was inside it should be fine, if it was outside or somewhere where dirty water could get in then it might be contaminated.

should be fine as long as nothing was spilt onto it
