I tend to clean mine after a month or two because it will start to get brown spots in the 10 gallon container i use for r/o water. It is noticable because the container is white. Normally i will just use some r/o water and wipe out the inside. Would it be better to use something to disinfect the container that is reef friendly?

My top off has stayed white for over a year now. I think the key is to keep any light from getting to it. Do you have a lid for it?

i do have a lid for it....it is not completly sealed due to power cords but i don't think that light is the issue...i think because the bucket and r/o is in the laundry room dust or other things are being introduced to the water...

Regardless of keeping light from the water, or keeping a lid on there, the basic principles of contagion still apply. Things will grow in that container. A quick alcohol decontamination once in a while will make sure nothing builds to an unreasonable level.

would others agree that a solution containing alcohol would be reef friendly?

I use bleach to clean my bucket. Just make absolutely sure you get it all out. Bleach leaves no residue. Isopropyl alcohol will work as well and it has the advantage of drying rather easily.

I use distilled white vinigar and water mix about 10 pt water 1 pt vinigar. I keep it in a spray bottle for other chores like cleaning refletors, bulbs, display panels of tank, cleaning pumps, sponges etc. The main concern is that you rinse everything that you disinfect very well (with any sloution)
My bucket is white with a red top (hmmm wonder where that came from) I get slime on my water line where it is submerged into the bucket, no noticable algea yet though
In my case, I don't clean it as long as the TDS of the water in the container is fine. I had one case where some green slime was growing in the container (due to not changing the pre-filters on time). I cleaned the container off with bleach, rinsed it well with RO water and waited 24hrs before using it again. The slime didn't come back.
