In the future I'm going to have a 50 gallon tank and am wondering what is the limit of fish or the rule for a lager tank. It will have a fuge and have a skimmer rated for 140 gallons. I've only had nanos and this is my first venture to a larger scale(not so large compared to you guys lol) I would like to put a wish list together but am not sure what's the limit?

I used to have a 56 gallon tank. Nice sized but you're limited to smaller rock hugging fish. I kept a pair of clowns, a purple firefish, royal gramma, pair of jawfish and a coral beauty. Lots of color and activity.

Depends on the fish, but I'd say 5-6 small to medium fish would be plenty. And which skimmer is it? Many manufacturers over-rate their product, so I'd caution against claiming too much from it. ;)

It really depends on what kinds of fish you would like to keep in there. If you put together a preliminary list you will find people on here can really help you out.

do u want a reef tank or a fish tank? fish can handle water issues much better than corals

It's going to be a reef tank, that is very open. The tank is 40"x20"x16" so about 50ish. It going to have one small island on one side with corals on it and the rest just open swimming space. I was thinking:

some really small schooling fish(5-6) say long spine cardinals?
a clown fish
some sort of small wrasse

THats about all I can think of so far??

the parameters will be pretty spot on because it's a reef the skimmer is the Octopus NW 150 Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer

I'll include a flame angel in the collection too. It's small, active, reef safe...also has nice color and feeds on algae off LR all day.

I think anthias are better than cardinals. They are more active and have lively colors.

but don't they get kinda large(anthias) are there any smaller ones?

I think Bartlett's anthias is smallest...3 in. Others are larger, 4-7 in. Don't thay take couple of years to get max adult size?

I wouldn't count on any dwarf angel being safe in a reef
