View Full Version : Cat jumped in RO brute can

I took the lid off my brute trash can for water changes to grab some fresh RO out. I did not put the lid back on.

I normally set things on the lid. I ended up dropping my entire fragging kit into the ro can thinking the lid was still on.

While I was drying it off with a towel and taking all the tools out I hear the cat jump in and splash around. She got out pretty fast.

Not sure what the deal is but the cat has some fascination with water. Just the other day she was walking on the EDGE of my 20g softie tank and her back leg fell in.

Think the RO is safe with a little bit of fur in there?

I would dump it and refill it. You never know what else the cat did while in there, I wouldn't risk it.....

Good point. It takes the better part of a day to fill that thing up. I would really hate to waste that much water.

I worst thing would be fecal matter or something but cats keep themselves pretty clean....

I wouldn't worry about it, but that's just me. I don't wash my hands before they go in the tank either.

Wouldn't worry about it. If your cat has a history of having crap and kitty litter on her I would dump the water, and also get another cat.

lol!

Nah shes pretty clean. Although, a long hair. We had to trim her butt fur awhile ago, to well, you know...

No problems sense!

You dont wash it with flea dip? Flea drops? Anything like that? I wouldnt risk it. Id dump all the water in the yard, though, rather than wasting it. Let something get some use out of it.

Nope she is very young and an inside cat, has never been treated with any chemical on the outside of her body.

My gf gives the cat a bath fairly frequently....

Yeah, we have 3 scumbag cats I hate, but wash every 2 weeks. Theyre well behaved, they actually just lay relaxed in the water and seem to ALMOST enjoy it, lol. Their only problem is they are cats, lol.

I figure if my cat has "gone fishing" numerous times in my tank with no damage other than dead fish, I figure you're ok.

Better safe than sorry man. It's just water :)

If it was my cat that fell in, I would dump the water, burn the brute can and replace my house.

Kidding, but honestly our cat is the grungiest, smelliest, poo poo kitty I've ever known and I would be inclined to replace the water.

I wouldn't worry about it. In fact if I could get a mini superlite helmet on my cat I would put him in the DT and let/make him swim around. :)

i know this wont be a popular answer for the cat lovers here, but cats are dirty and if youre an anal reefkeeper like myself i would not let that water near my tank. ive known many cats over the years and seriously folks ewww. How can people let an animal that walks around in its own toilet climb on their kitchen counters? ewww.

Well its sounds like 50/50 on the cat water, I guess I do a 14 gallon water change and see what happens.

Oh and she is more refined than the average cat, with a taste for wine and baguette:

We have a black long-hair too. Our cat is told that she is not allowed in "the fish room." Sometimes makes me leary of having an open top tank, but so far the farthest she has gone is sitting in the chair by the tank (knock on wood). :p As for the water, I myself would probably put it in 5 gallon buckets and use for rinsing equipment or something. No reason to waste it. In fact it is probably perfectly fine to use in the reef.

So long as you don't use any Frontline or other flea/tick meds on her, I wouldn't worry about it. But I'm one of those totally non-anal people when it comes to animals. I doubt her short "swim" did much, if any, damage to the water. Hair is probably the only thing she may have left behind.

I still wouldn't take the chance, considering they do scratch their own fecal matter around with their paws, and besides that, it's still an animal, alot of animals may lose some control of bladder under such situations, and well, you know what that means.....

Either way I guess technically it would be diluted to the point that it's probably harmless..... that and considering skimmers, and other filtration it wouldn't last long in a reef tank......

If something does go strange in the upcoming months, keep us posted!!! ;)

I definitely will.

She was in there for just a second but still got pretty wet. I am going to go ahead and use it I think.

Ug I can't stand cats-my wife Loves them. We use to own a cat and she would steal food from your dinner plate and run under a bed to eat, faster then you knew what happened(drove me nuts!!!) I just don't really like the attitude of cats in general. She did once jump in my tank and back out faster, was really funny though. No ill effect to the tank.

This is what we have now(110 lb 6 month old Great Shepard)

He will just sit and watch the tank with me and dosn't steal food and always helps with the tank(watches what I do lol)

We have 3 cats in the house, and they love to sip the RO water out of my buckets while I'm doing water changes, and I don't think that it's ever made enough of a difference to really worry about. Granted, I've never had a cat fall in my RO supply, (well, not that I know of) but I probably wouldn't be too worried about it.

I have had my cats(bengals) jump in the tank RO buckets wherever they can get to water. They wont drink out of a bowl so they drink out of my RO buckets. Been doing it for years no effect.

Updated: I recently changed 14g of the cat water in my 90g tank.

I must say that things have never looked better. If you have a cat I suggest dipping 3 days before the water change. It needs a little bit of time to mature.

LOL - That's classic!!!!!! Can't wait to get home and try it. Luckily I have the black, long-haired kind as well. Probably wouldn't work as well with a short-haired or calico. ;)
