I've have Nano Tanks for a couple years, and after experimenting with various fish; typically your best bet is to grow corals and have some smaller fish.
If you're looking for large displays of fish a larger tank is essential, this is obviously not the route.
I've had great success with dwarf lionfish, frog fish and even a snowflake eel (over 2 years old).
Tangs have been complete failures; they get spooked with improper circulation, bump heads with other fish and frankly pace as prisoners of a cruel owner (buyers remorse)
Other ornamental reef fish end up dying and I find it most profitable to just grow and frag corals in these smaller set ups. Its realistically cruel to take these fish from the vast see and constrain their swimming in such tight quarters.
