will a copper band butterfly and a yellow tang ever really get along

If the CBB is well established prior to adding the tang, the tank large enough, the aquascape provides hiding places in abundance, and the tang isn't a particularly aggressive individual, then yes it can work.
If all of those things don't line up, probably not.

Yep. MUST be well established or a cycle of intimidation will have begun.

I keep a small yellow tang and a large CBB together with no problems. The CBB was added first and is about 5" while the yellow tang is only about 2.5". So far so good, down the road it may be a problem, but my tank has got quite a bit of room and hiding spots (315g).

dont be stupid like me i had my yellow established in the tank for a while got a CBB .....basically 30 wasted dollars right there.....tang just destroyed the cbb in about 2-3hrs max

Actually I try not to net any fish, or at least do not take it out of the water in a net. I use a net to contain, and tupperware (or equivalent) to transport.
