i got this from a friend today but he wasn't sure the name. he told me it was a yellow bali acropora. is there any truth to that? thanks

Possibly, but it looks more like an LPS to me.

I would'nt call this an Acropora, although many are sps are Acro's
in taxonomy at the top levels. I'm not sure what this is. The closest I've ever seen is a Hydnophora, But this almost look like a cross of Galaxia and Hydno. Interesting coral, not sure.

This appears to be either an Oculina varicosa or an Oculina diffusa. These corals appear in Volume 2 of JEN Veron's Corals of the World. See pages 98-102.
The two possible corals can be found in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic Ocean off the south east coast of the US.
