3 of my new macros in my 55g long have died, basically by falling apart altogether. The only thing I could think of that might cause this was excessive circulation. I was running 2 koralias of 850 gph each in the tank in addition to the filter and skimmer return. Within days, the algae seemed to fall apart as pieces broke away more and more. I turned off both koralias to see what if things might improve. I've been doing with potassium nitrate and iron and I run a 135 watt PC. Is excessive current the culprit or might it be something else? Also, I'd like to know what kind of current generators other people use in their macro tanks.

I also think current is to blame because the short stocky types such as codium are doing fine, will the longer, filamentous types got torn apart. The longest plant in my tank, sargassum, is drooping now which I presume is a bad sign.

What kind of macroalgae did you have die?

High Flow won't kill codium or sargassum. Where we have it locally it is found in VERY high flow areas, higher flow than you will have in most any aquarium.

I'd say you need more light on them.
