I am about done with my DIY canopy. I still need to stain it and install the light. Im going to be using one 175 watt Iwasaki 15000k MH bulb and a reflector. I need to figure out what fan to use. Are computer fans good or should I use a small clip on from walmart or something.

Here are pics of the canopy I made today.

I really like the IceCap varable fans. They are really quite and only go to full speed (112 cfm) only when the temperature around the probe reaches 113 degrees. Even at full throttle, they are very, very quite.

Good Luck And Have Fun!!!;

How do you wire the converter? Do you just splice the two wires together?

Also got a link for the converter?

Any 12vDC converter should work. old phone charger

I use these. They move a ton of air and they are super quiet.

I actually made my canopy to fit a couple of these 6" Air King fans.

They're much quieter for the amount of air they blow when compared to some of the computer fan designs, but without the space obviously it's a useless recommendation. I also made the top of my canopy mostly open, allowing for very good air flow (which has eliminated my need for a skimmer).

yep I dont have a link handy but yeah an old phone charger would probably work..

I've had the icecap variable fans in the past and they were nice they were quiet but not completely silent=) but they also are $100 for two.. I paid $30 for 4=) so i have two backups.. I didnt have the extra cash for icecaps for this setup.

you think one of those 4" fans blows enough air for a 36" canopy with one 175 mh?

I got the fan part figured out but I still have another question..

So do I just cut a 3-4" hole in the side of the canopy and install the fan on the inside?

yes . if you are doing a 4" fan. cut the hole with a diameter of 4". that will still leave the corners for mounting

I got this fan at radio shack. I hooked it up to a power cord and its ready to be installed. Hopefully this thing moved enough air.
