I got the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW it is waterproof to 10 meters. I love it. I still need a lot of practice.

I agree with the 1030. I was going to get that one, i decided on the 1010 which is not waterproof, but it has a 7x optical zoom. Takes sweet pictures. Both are great cameras. I ordered from Amazon, saves about $100 over the retail stores.

i'm a canon person myself - just look for maximum OPTICAL zoom, image stabilization, and a useable macro mode and pretty much any will do you fine. The deciding factor is really just how much $$$ you want to spend

For point and shoot

I was looking an the new Nikon 12 mega pixel and 24x optical zoom for $399

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-Camera/26171/COOLPIX-P90.html

For Digital SLR

Canon EOS digital rebel XS1 12.2 megapixel $750
Sony Alpha 14.2 Megapixel SLR $699
Nikon D80 10.2megapixel $800

If money was no issue I would get something like Nikon D90 with the lens kit from Costco, but its around $1,200 and I really want to keep it under $1,000 for the camera...

Would I be able to take nice macro shots on my reef with the new point and shoot from Nikon with 24x of optical zoom or should I go with a nice DSLR like the ones mentioned above?

I lkie the choices that a DSLR gives you. I currently have two canon digital rebels and love them. My wife uses a canon point and shoot. both are fine choices - it just depends on how involved you want to get.

I agree with billdogg. You first have to decide what price point you want to be at. Mine was under $400. I ended up spending $225 for the camera. It has 2 macros, 7 optical zoom. I gave up the waterproof. Its much easier to stick the camera in the main tank and take pictures then it is to rig up a photo booth underwater!

I bought a used canon 30D kit for 600$ and I couldn't be happier with it. I would never recommend anyone to get the newest latest model of dslr because once a new model comes out to replace it (which usually doesn't offer a whole lot of revolutionary new features) the price of the old model plummets... the quality of the camera remains consistent though.

I also own a canon powershot that I have an underwater housing for. I take it scuba diving.

I agree that if you want to spend enough, a good digital SLR will give you the control to keep you entertained for years

I picked up a used Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixel) kit lens, 2 batteries, battery grip, and 8gb compact flash card for $280 used on ebay. Just search around and you can find a deal if your patient.
