Its a matter of choice on the color. Black makes the colors pop more in my opinion

You paint the outside of the tank

It seems to be more popular to use Krylon fusion in the spray lately to paint the glass. I personally use the Rustoleum in the can and a small disposable foam roller and brush it on. I have tried both methods and the roll on covers better and doesnt chip/scrape off anywhere as easy as the spray over time.
Either method just make sure to clean the glass good and tape off everything you dont want to get paint on. use a couple thin coats for better adhesion than one thick one

Yes, you definitely want to paint the outside of the tank. If you search the internet for "Blue Life Water Colors Aquarium Background" you will find a backing that you can stick to the back of the aquarium. It's a good alternative to painting, IMO.

I plan on painting the back of my tank too, just with spray paint. What should I use to clean the back off?

I just cleaned the back real well with glass cleaner on the smaller ones. On my 210g I had a few oily spots from the store or shipping so I cleaned the back with some alcohol and then glass cleaner.

On a acrylic tank I`m not sure what the best thing would be to clean it with as I have never painted one of them only glass......

I used window tint. Worked great, no mess and easy to change in the future.
