Ok, let me start on this one. If asking about the green ribbon like algae to the left, looks like Enteromorpha (http://www.algaebase.org/search/genus/detail/?genus_id=30&-session=abv4:4840375C07d6d209A0RIq29B77C0). It's thallus is tubular, so slicing a piece with a sharp blade can confirm this characteristic.

Aww...I thought it was Chaetomorpha and I was so happy D: Its a very slow grower and doesn't attach to anything. I weight it down with crushed coral.
I meant the next pic...sorry about that D:
Okay, thanks :D
By the way, Mentat, I just saw your signature! Wow! 46 years in the freshwater hobby is 3.2 times longer than I've been alive and 5.75 times my experience! I'm in awe!

Got it narrowed down to a possible Porgie (http://www.fishbase.org/identification/specieslist.cfm?famcode=330&areacode=&spines=&fins=&CFID=57293617&CFTOKEN=47291439) (Sparidae family). Need better pictures (and maybe few inches of growth) to better ID.

Well it's grown quite a bit now and has a very big mouth in proportion to body size. I'll try and get more pics :D

I need to get a hold of some of that stuff. So you got most of it from the beach?

The Gracil., Red Grape, Grape and Featheer are from the LFS. The unidentified stuff was from the beach :P

I agree with Enteromorpha, I have the same stuff. I would also agree with a very small Porgie, we have those locally as well.

03/25/2009, 06:32 AM
Thanks for the confirmation :P
I just got another fistful of the stuff from the beach. I'm using it mainly to provide a "land" area as well as nitrate removal for my feeder crab bucket. I want to make a turf algae filter bit with enteromorpha. Is this possible?

That is a very mean fish, i caught one that was about 3 inches long off of the NC coast and he killed about 100$ worth of fish. they grow quick and will eat anything. mine had a nice light blue spot on his side, i sold it for 10 $ and the fishstore owner flushed the fish after a while(1.5 years. i could never id it so maybe we have a differant fish, pacific collection ????

That little fish does look like a perciformes (ie, porgy and similar fish).
Sebae09 is right in that they are typically very aggressive. Much like big cichlids and perches in freshwater.
Also pretty good to eat!
Now personally, I'd consider him "live food" for that mantis ;)

He already has an oscar/green terror-like personality...

Ulva (http://www.jonolavsakvarium.com/blog/200708/ulva.jpg) is broad "leaved", "Enteromorpha (http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/773/15021526.JPG) is thin/long "leaved".

not all ulva has broad leaves though, their is some that looks exactly like that photo, and even some that look like byropsis
