I am getting the following wet/dry with my new tank and want to convert it to a sump without the bio balls and trickle tray

I'm thinking i can just take the bio balls out and be done with it but the trickling through the blue tray might be kind of loud so was thinking of ditching that as well. Has anyone done this or do you guys thing it will work?

i'd take out any piece of foam i could find, first off. secondly, i'd fill the trickle section full of rubble rock.

Take out bio balls/blue tray leave in blue foam to stop anything from going into your return pump clean out foam weekly. Also think about getting an auto top off for evaporation

rip the foam out, without question, if you want a sump that is basically maintenance free. or, if you like squeeze fish detritis out of a sponge, leave it in
as far as the bioballs, i have seen no evidence to suggest that they are beneficial over lr. i personally prefer lr, but i won't spend your money for you :)

Thanks for the help guys. I already have a good bit of LR in the tank so I'm thinking the bio balls are going to be more trouble than they are worth. I was also thinking the blue tray is going to be loud and annoying without the bio balls so I wanted to ditch that. If the wet/dry with the skimmer and return pump wasn't free I'd most likely go in a different direction but I'm thinking this would work just the same as a normal sump.
How does a small baffle coming up from the bottom sound instead of that blue sponge? It will keep everything out of the return section I would think.
