View Full Version : Not really chemistry related....Need a more accurate refractometer - Which brand???

As the Subject states, my Sybon refractometer is less than desirable at holding an accurate reading. I calibrate it with Randy's homemade calibration fluid to 35ppt and 2-5 days later is is reading 37ppt. This is constant and with less than 1 yr use, I'm thinking of returning it. If the vendor is non-cooperative and since recalibration is time-consuming, I may just buy a new one. The prismn is rinsed and dried after each use and kept in a cool, dry place when storing. It has NEVER been dropped on a hard surface or immersed. What's the deal...did i get what I payed for?

So, what is the general consensus on 'best' ATC refractometer? I spent the $43 on the Sybon and unless another 'cheap' one has a proven track record I would likely not spend that little again.

What's anyone's expereince?
Thanks

I've had one of the Marine Depot brand refractometers (very reasonably priced) for about 3 years, and I haven't had to recalibrate it since my initial calibration when I bought it. As one of the cheaper refractometers, I'd say it was well worth the price. And it is ATC.

At least here in Europe most refractometers seem to come from the same factory ;) There seems to be very little difference between them.

There are more expensive (and presumably more accurate) models available, from $100 all the way up to $10000+, like this one: http://www.labdepotinc.com/Product_Details~id~363~pid~12852.aspx :lmao:
