View Full Version : 55 Overkill?

I just went through my rebuild of my tank after an acid bath to my LR. I have now a 55 gallon that has a remora C pro skimmer with the upgraded mag 7 pump. I also have a power filter/refugium hang on back. I will be adding my retrofit 4-bulb t5. Would it be too much for me if I put on a 48" 4X65 power compact fixture with the t5s? Also is the skimmer overkill for the 55?

Just want to make sure that I start things off on the right side this time

I appreciate anyone's help.

I would never say any skimmer is over kill, ever, on any tank.

I would not use the pc lights in addition to the T5. Not only will they not make much difference, I don't think it would be practical.

You should be set to grow some really nice corals when all this comes together.

The skimmer is fine. Undersized for some people. :D The lights are dependent on what corals you want to keep. What are you thinking as far as inhabitants goes?

I ran that skimmer on my 28 nano for a while without any problems, it should be able to keep up with your 55, defiantly not overkill. It was a little noisy, but did a great job of skimming.

I wouldn't bother with the PCs. But if you do have the room you might consider better reflectors down the road. I hardly have enough room over my 55g for the 4 lights I have.

I ran an AquaC Urchin for awhile. It was okay, but definitely not overkill (like has already been stated.)

Do you have a link as to what an acid bath is?

True. I just sent him a PM with the link & told him about the "Subscribe" button at the bottom of the page.

Will the extra power from the power compacts help light the tank with the t5's? I want to keep some sps down the road. I may just throw an 8bulb tek light on also?

I would say it depends on what kind of T5s you are running. What ballast are you using? What bulbs? And does each bulb have an individual reflector?

If you are running the right combination of ballast, bulbs, and reflectors, you could very well keep SPS at the top of the tank with the lighting that you have now. If you do not have the right combo, then I would not suggest it. An 8 bulb Tek light would do the trick, but an 8 bulb Tek Light would be to wide for your tank, you would probably have to go with a different manufacturer.
