View Full Version : High alkalinity and fish

I was having low pH due to high indoor carbon dioxide levels. But after adding a diy kalk dripper, my pH stays in the range of 8.0 to 8.2. I started dosing kalk last Thursday. All my water parameters are fine except alkalinity. Before dripping kalk it was 3.5 meq/L and now it is 5.5 meq/L. I did do a 30 gallon water change on Sunday. Maybe that in combination with dripping kalk caused it to go that high. My tank is a FOWLR. My live rock(200lbs) has started to grow additional coraline algae. Which is great.:) Right now I have no fish. But I am planning to buy some next weekend. Can high alkalinity cause any problems to fish?

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0-1
pH: 8.0 - 8.2
Alkalinity: 5.5 meq/L
Calcium: 460
Salinity: 1.023

I do not think that 5.5 meq/L will be a problem for most fish.
