Salt mixes can vary slightly with each bucket/batch. I use Coralife. In general, I'd start with 1/2 cup per gallon & then test SG reading with hydrometer or refractometer, whichever you have. 1/2 cup is yielding close to 1.024 SG with my current Coralife bucket of salt.

I think IO is your best bet. Been around for a long time.

I use coralife salt and use just under 3 cups per 5 gal to yeild 1.026 at 78 degrees. I'm usually + or - .001 every time. I really enjoy this salt, and the price is great. I used to use instant ocean, then switched to reef crystals, but now i'm sticking with coralife

Interesting. What was it aboout reef crystals that you didn't like?

I have used Coralife Salt for 3 years now and do not have it down to a science. Your best bet is to test everytime you mix up new water to keep an accurate salinity level.

I agree with reefscape coralife is a better salt all around. I used rc but my lfs told me to switch because of the levels and I agree it has a better mag count in it and i have noticed a difference.

there was in 2007 a chart of all of the salt mixes out there and the best one al around was coralife, maybe not the highest of alk/mag/cal but all of the salt mixes are all different like one having 11dlh,one having mag at 1400,cal all 450,but the coralife was the best all around, been using it since then and wont go back..............just my opinion, and mixing, its just per each water change or upgrade,if it was to easy it would be no fun............

Reef Crystals and Instant Ocean carry a high alkalinity (12 dKH), and are also know to vary quite a bit from bucket to bucket... especially Reef Crystals, and a lot of people (myself included) have reported receiving buckets which posted an alkalinity of 14 dKH.

However, Instant Ocean has been reported to post more consistent numbers from bucket to bucket.

Short answer... there is no "best" salt, as everyone doesn't necessarily target the same water parameters.

So my advice is to first pick your target water parameters, then try to choose a salt which best fits your targets and your budget.

You will more than likely need to buffer one level or another with just about any salt though. Currently I am using a 50/50 blend of Coralife and Instant Ocean.
