Well, I just came back from a 2-day trip to find my tank mid-crash. It seems that last night the timer went on the fritz and never turned off my halides. In true idiot fashion I also managed to have left the fan over my sump off. Temperature was at 89.5 degrees. I quickly turned off the halides, added some ice to the sump, and got the fans going. Only certain loss so far is my beloved cleaner shrimp. All fish are swimming around as normal so far. The corals in my mixed reef are not looking good. A few of the SPS are starting to show signs of bleaching. Is there anything I can do? I'm trying to get the temperature down, but not too fast so as not to add even more shock. Water parameters are good so far. No detecable ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate. PH seemed unusually high. I've started mixing up water for a water change. Any suggestions? I am also ordering a reef keeper elite as we speak.

Well, bring the temperature down slowly. While high, 89.5 is not outside the realm of a temporary temperature spike. Particularly watch for ammonia and be ready to do a water change as quickly as feasible if you see any. For the future, a controller for MH, fans, heater, will give more assurance. Good luck!

That was not necessary.

Ordering the controller is a good idea. I've had several of the mechanical timers stick on and off while using them before. I'd also look at a chiller if you have the funds. It usually doesnt have to come on, but if something ever happened with the A/C going out in the house, it's nice to have back-up.

As far as controllers check out the Lighthouse pro, has alot of good features for the money and Joe is great at customer support.

sorry about your tank, thats the last thing you wanna deal with when you come home. when i go out of town i leave the lights off, seems to work well like a few days of overcast.

mods plz change thread title to "Cleaner Shrimp Crash"

lol sorry about the temp scare, I've been there too, but it sounds like you're going to be just fine.

Sounds like you've done the right corrective actions and you should come out okay. Be ready with the water change though as suggested and do test for ammonia.

I'm pretty sure they don't teach reefkeeping in engineering school, what a ridiculous thing to say. Thanks for the hummer though.

lol I gotta say, we must have a different definition of hummer ^

I'll be civil and not respond to those that are CLEARLY smarter than me.

Update: So far I have lost the following...
Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
Bartlett's Anthias
GARF purple bonsai frag
Crayola frag
Green Birdsnest small colony
Hawkins Blue Enchinata frag
Aussie Acan

My other corals are not looking good but I'm hoping they will recover and that I don't have any more losses. Does anyone have an idea what would cause my PH to go high? Where is the connection?

We probably have the same definition of hummer, and no not the SUV. It was my way of counterpunching. :)
