I've got a Red Scooter Blenny who is just about too cool :) Anyway, every few days or so he ends up (or gets himself) covered in sand. It is sticking to him because it doesn't just fall away when he moves. Any idea whats happening?

Other than my first impression of "defense mechanism," I know that dragonettes (spoiler alert: he's a dragonette, but they're sold as blennies) have very thick slime coats. That (imo) explains the stickiness.

My scooter sleeps burried in the sand at night, and in the morning, he will have sand stuck on his head just like yours. The sand sticks cuz of the slime coating as said above ^^

Hummm.. I'll have to get the flashlight out and see how it sleeps...

They are real tough to find. I can only spot mine because he sleeps in the same spot every night and i saw him come out of the sand one morning. Otherwise, i would never have spotted those frog-like eyes of his poking up through the sand!

You can generally see their eyes above the sand and their two little gill outlets.

Can't resist one last comment. Please refer to it as a Starry Dragonet or Ocellated Dragonet or, at the very least, a Scooter Dragonet. It is not and never has been a blenny and continuing with that common name only serves to maintain the confusion. Best, small
