Hi gang,

In the "maze" of commercially available filter media, is there any type you would recommend I use on a regular basis besides activated carbon? I'll have a 180 gal fish and hardy invert tank with live rock. Also what brand of carbon do you like best?

thanks

How is your tank doing? Are there any specific problems you're trying to solve?

Hi der_wille_zur_macht,

It's actually not up yet (almost). I just want to have all of my systems and functions in place before I start it up.

By the way I know you're not supposed to run carbon during initial cycle, I'm thinking of the period after cycle

thanks again

What are your stocking plans, and what other equipment/systems do you have in mind?

Other than the clean up crew of snails hermits etc I would like an anemone and clown, some damsels, regal tang, couple urchins, and maybe a few other small fish. As far as systems go I have a 36" venturi skimmer (in sump), Blue line HD40X main pump, couple Tunze circ pumps for flow. The sump has two chambers for filter media placement. I was definitely going to run carbon in one but wasn't sure what to put (if anything) in the other. Maybe run carbon in both?

I would consider a GFO reactor. You have the advantage of just starting up which means the GFO will maintain a low Po4 level from the beginning. I have a 180 as well and found that it has been easier to maintain my phosphate levels than if I had waited until they reached unacceptable levels. I run mine all the time and have seen no detrimental side affects.

Carbon has been reported to be a source of phosphate so I would choose one that is processed to minimize the Po4. BRS has some that I hear is good. That might be a good place to start.

Hi rgrobe, thanks a lot.

You're welcome. Good luck with your tank. A 180 is a great project. Have fun.
