I got this acan in a trade and I was curious what it was. Looking at Vivids site, it resmbles the War Coral, with smaller green eyes. Im assuming its not a war, since the wars are so expensive...

Also curious what you may think its worth (its not for sale at this point) I just wanted to see what the conensus value would be, to see how I Faired in our trade.

I'd go with an acan echinata;)

Yeah, I thought it was an acan echinata, but arent there variations, like the acan lords?

^ there are names that people have given them to make more money when they sell frags, but as far as species it looks like echinata to me. beware though, i've had my echinatas sting the crap out of corals that I placed near them, they can be prettty aggressive

Lords and echinata's are two different types of acans.

Lord's are usually easy to id, their heads aren't connected like yours. Echinatas usually look like yours except maybe not as puffy.

x2!!!

If an echinata falls on practically any other coral, it will devour it QUICK! I had an echinata fall on a rainbow lord colony that people had offered me over $500 for. By the time i woke up, the echinata had eaten about $450 of it:mad:

I understand that, Sufunk. What I was saying was I know its an Acan Echinata, and not an Acan lord or Favia, etc. But I know Acan lords are given their names depending upon colors, like the rainbows and what not. I was curious if the Acan Echinatas did the same marketing, like NCSU pointed out. Thanks for the heads up on the stinging, NCSU; Maybe I'll move him since my purple rim cap is ominously close to him.

Ah, ok:cool:

Yeah, echinata's have names also, not sure what yours would be. EVERYTHING has a name now so i'm sure someone has one for yours.

It wont be much longer before Tyree and the others will be naming aiptasia and cyno and trying to gouge you for it:rolleyes:

LMAO!

Funny, but you'll probably get a few pm's from the chopshops asking how much you want for a 1'4" frag of it!:D

I wonder what this acan goes for. Ive seen something comparable for $75 for a 2" frag. This things like 6"

My lfs would sell something like that for between say $60-80 but my LFS is really good. I dont think theres a big market for echinata frags since they arent "hot". I;d say a fair price for that would be about $75, maybe a little more.

On the bright side, eventually Tyree and the others will decide to make echinatas hot and "extremely rare",lol.

Placing a value on any coral is tricky. Adding a "name" does not really make it more value even if the asking price is higher. As mentioned above, that coral is not particularly hot. It is also not extremely high color contrast; plus it is extremely aggressive. Did you make a great trade? Depends what you gave for it.

I love my echinata. He was $22 from my lfs and 8x3. He was marked down from $200 since no one wanted him, but he has brick red corallites with a green rim around the centers which are striated red/white. Very cool. And they grow like weeds. I don't feed mine and he pops out at least three polyps a month.

I would buy an echinata acan over a Lordhownesis Acan anyday.
The regular orange, purple and green echinata acan is GORGEOUS.
