Octo Extreme 200 - Wrong pinwheel for mesh mod?

I am taking my Sicci 2500 apart for cleaning and I want to change the current wheel (bunch of little spikes) to the meshwheel.

The bag that came with the skimmer has a plain yellow wheel with a square of mesh (that does not look very dense).

Online I see people attaching the mesh with zip ties or fishing line. The problem is that I do not see any holes in the wheel to attach these. Did they send me the wrong one?

Also, do you put on multiple layers of the mesh to make it thicker?

No problem! I ran across it last week while I was researching getting a Sicce 2500 for my DNW-200... turns out they won't run well out of water. :(
