Was looking for some design help with my next project:

2 50 breeders w/ a 40 breeder sump and 40 breeder refugium.

How would you lay it out?

1 stand? 2 different stands?Stacked stand for both?long stand for both?

What equipment would you use power heads, closed loop, monitors reactors,skimmers...basically ever aspect of the system.

Want it to be 1 complete system.

biggest problem I am having is the lighting......The system will be a high end/LE mixed reef.

NO canopies I am an open top kinda guy.....LOL

I don't have much input, but a stacked system that drained from tank to tank to sump would be pretty cool. You might be able to get away with more of an industrial look, like some of the Japanese tanks out there.

if u can have the sump/fuge in another room like poolkeeper's setup, it makes the hobby 100% more enjoyable. Most frustrating part is not being able to access the equipment easily.

You should go checkout some tanks and write down the ideas that you like :)

Another room is not an option but I do have the whole room to play with.

I think I will just build a long stand for both of them to sit side by side.

mike, the thing you have to think about them sitting side by side is, you want to leave plenty of room to clean the glass between them, you dont want them to be butted up right next to eachother.

yep....stand will be 80L x 20W x 40H...you gonna help me build it....lol

It would be pretty cool to have them side by side with one light fixture, moving between the 2 tanks, plus a little cheaper than 2 lights. You have some fun work ahead of you. Since you are using 50 breeders you could get by with 2 or 3 korilas for each tank. Of course any good skimmer will get it done just remember you are looking at at least a 120 gallon water table. Good Luck

was actually thinking about 1 closed loop for both tanks...how big of an external pump would I need since the stand is 40" tall?

If you build the stand deep enough to rest the pump on the top of the stand, head will not be much of an issue at all. Just an idea.

I use a big hammerhead pump for my closed loop, so just about any good one will do what you want for that. Just be sure to put shut off valve for each inlet & outlet. Something I did not do and regret it. But will take care of that on the next tank.

Good idea...but since this will be out in the open and the display 50 breeder will be starfire front and sides I wanna hide all I can...I may just build a platform under the stand for the closed loop to sit on.

That true, you could build a platform just below the tanks and it'll only sit a few inches lower than the the bottom of the tank.

May have changed my mind on the closed loop in favor of the new vortech mp-10...aquacave will have them in may...for 194 wonder if they will be a little cheaper elsewhere??

small in the planning stage update:

2 50 breeders from glass cages...1 starfire on 3 sides
2 40 breeders from LFS
stand will be 80 x 22 x 40
2 t5 4 bulb fixtures from fish need it . com
2 vortech mp-10 when they are released...closed loop scraped.

If I was you, Mike I would go with MP20s. They're only $50 more, can be dialed back so they're not too strong, and can be upgraded to MP40s, unlike the MP10s. :)

I'm curious, though... why are you doing 2 50 breeders instead of one larger tank?

I really don't know...lol.....Something different....If I could find a good deal on a tank I may setup 1 big tank...I would really like to have like a 180-220.

I would have to reenforce the floor for that one...If I new that things would grow in the tank and look great I would. maybe one of these days.
