Thanks guys for the compliments. As for the tank, It has been set up for two years. Some of the corals came from my previous tank which was a sixty gallon. The tank is a euro brased starfire tank made from leemar.

The tangs are both bristle tooth tangs. One is a chevron tang and the other I am not sure, but I have seen him labeled as a fine line tang on liveaquaria.

Sweet tank! Love the efflo.......

sixtygallon212
04/18/2009, 08:39 AM
Some of the equipment I use is:
Skimmer: Euro Reef 8-2 (not state of the art anymore but I love the guy)
Lighting: Has a three stage lighting system with T-12's for 12hrs a day, T-5's for 10hrs a day, and two 250watt halides for 6hrs a day running pheonix bulbs.
I love the look of a dense fish population, so my tank is set up in that fasion. I have a lot af flow in the display, a 20gal refugium, and a 10gal prop tank all attached together. The overfiltration and consistant weekly water changes allow me to feed a lot and keep the fish I want to keep. Plus all the nutrients and low amounts of waste in the system seem to work well with growth and color of the coral. I will try and post some more pictures of the filtration of the tank soon.

Awesome tank!
I noticed that some of your plating montiporas grow out and down at an angle instead of upwards. A few of mine also do this. What in your experience causes growth down? The most reasonable thing I could think of is that it has to do with flow around the coral?

04/19/2009, 09:18 AM
Looks great.!!!! What do you use for water movment?

sixtygallon212
04/19/2009, 10:59 PM
The T5's are for suppliment, and I am running two 48" high outputs. One of the bulbs is a Actinic and the other is 460nm. They are run by a hamilton electronic ballast and waterproof endcaps. I also use two 36" regular output T12 that power Corallife actinic bulbs which really pop out the greens. I use a Iwaki 100mdx for flow which is sent through an oceanmotions 4way that helps stir sediment. I have four returns for the close loop (one in each corner to maximize flow dispersal). I love how the oceanmotions simulates tidal activity so closely, you can really see the shift in flow and how the fish respond.

wow, great tank!! what are the dimensions of this tank? Which reflectors are you using?

How many lyretail anthias are you keeping in their? any aggression with each other or other fish?

How long have you had this tank set up? Were all of your SPS grown under that lighting combination?

Kudos again on a great tank!!

macreefster
04/20/2009, 07:53 AM
sweet tank! love the large colorful corals and density of the tank. great job if incorporating so many caps, love all that horizontal growth. what lighting are you using?

sixtygallon212
04/20/2009, 10:05 AM
(eaglesrx)
The tank is 48"x20"x20" which comes to about 85 gallons. The metal halide setup is run by icecap ballasts using double ended PFO reflectors.
Fish:
6x Lyrtail anthias
Chevron Tang
Fine Line Tang
Australian Possum Wrasse
Common Cleaner Wrasse
Purple Firefish
Yellow Watchman Goby
Bangaii Cardinal
True Percula Clownfish
Starry Blenny
The tangs fought for about two hours when introduced but luckly the chevron tang was bigger than the more aggressive fine line tang. All the other fish were introduced with no problems, I think it helps that I feed a lot of food so they don't feel they have to compete. The tank has been set up for almost two years and the lighting has been the same.
(macreefster)
Thanks for the compliments. The lighting specs are on the first page. I plan to take some pictures of the behind the scenes for you guys as soon as I can.

I love the tank! Beautiful colors and coral combinations.

What's the tabling acro? It's beautiful. :) Also, I'm sorry, but I still don't understand how the setup is put together even with the pics. I can see and understand the closed loop I think, but I can't figure out how the sump ties in. Again, great job!

SolidDetail808
04/23/2009, 08:12 PM
Is that some kind of vent? Please explain.

sixtygallon212
04/23/2009, 08:26 PM
I don't know the name of the table, but I do know that it isn't an efflo. The sump sits directly under the tank. The stand extends 10" behind the tank and incorporates the canopy as well (had to make it 30" so it would fit in the door). I don't own a house so I wanted the system to be as completely inclosed as possible and easy to move. The tank can be detached from the cabnet by unions and it has a detachable refugium that is inclosed to look like a nightstand. Water is feed to the refugium with gravity and then feeds into the sump (no pump needed). The stucture you see on the right is a ventilation system that evacuates the hot air from the chiller, closed loop pump, and lights via $18 osh duct fan.

Thanks for the positive replies. I was thinking about the design of the tank for about nine months. I am thrilled everyone likes it so much. I am very happy with it and I don't think I would change a thing on the design. Thats funny that James said I should have been an engineer, because my grandfather was a great engineer and my dad has always loved building things. Kind of off subject but something spawned in the tank last night. I don't know exactally what it was because I was in the shower for a while. When I got out, the tank water was milky. I think it was a euphyllia in the refugium. All seems well this morning, but it is time to do a water change anyways.

Fabulous tank. I have to ask. Do you dose anything or runULNS? How about salt? Is there a particular brand that you favor?

sixtygallon212
04/28/2009, 11:24 PM
Thanks Bolo Tran. I have a big skimmer and feed a lot. I dose 2ml of salifert amino acids, six drops of KM iron, and iodide everynight, or before every large feeding. I try to dose in small amounts every day to keep everything as stable as possible. The iodide is lugol's solution and I dilute the bottle 1 drop iodide/4 drops water so I can dose 3/4 of a drop of the original molarity solution every day because one drop would go over the recommended dosage. I don't use Zeovit or any other fancy products, I do have a calcium reactor though. As for the salt I use Tropic Marin Pro and mix it in a plastic bucket for a day with a heater. While mixing I add dkh buffer and calcium. I also add a lot of magnesium in the tank, not in the bucket because it makes all the calcium parcipitate out of solution.

What is this? You're the first person I've ever seen with them also. I've had two color morphs of it. It appears to be a mix between a blasto and a lobo and it has weird tentacles that come from the center ring. Mine have their own skeletons like candy canes. Curious if yours do also or if they just look like my mystery coral.

THANKS EVERYONE!

erid:
My lighting specs can be found towards the front of the thread. I feed 5 cubes daily of hykari size frozen mysis/brine and two cubes of rotifes with one mL of selcon. I add DT's and marine snow about twice a week. I also add iodine, iron, magnesium, and amino acids daily.

I got a new reeflow snapper close loop pump to replace my iwaki 100mdx. The iwaki is a great pump but used to much power and created to much heat. I have had the snapper for less than a week and love the flow and how quit it is, but the seal has already started to leak. I guess it was mishandled in shipping. Does anyone else have this pump? I must say reeflow has good customer service so far, but I am still concerned about my choice.

Here are some tank down shots without the aquarium lights. A full spectrum remote flash was used so the corals in the pictures look like they would if seen in the wild.

To think that lobo was saved from my refugium all those years ago, it just goes to show what a little tlc can do for a coral.

Craig, I have a copy of photoshop 9.0 cs2 if your interested. I can show you how to use some of the more basic features in it to help out the photos a bit. It's a large program so let me know.

Your tank looks so good.
May i ask you what camera you using?
Also what set up on it?
I recently got a FUJIFILM S1500, but I can't take good pics out of my tank,~_~

I don't know that much about cameras, but the first set of pictures where taken with a Canon 20D. The macro shots were taken by my friend that is a professional photographer and he uses a Canon 5D MarkII. The tank down shots were also taken with a Canon 5D MarkII. The camera I used on the last set of shots was a Canon 10D. The main concepts to focus on are the white ballance and aperature that I have found but I am no expert.

I'm just curious, have you had any SPS grow above your water? :P
Coz I see your SPS are so close to the top

I have a three stage lighting system with T-12's for 12hrs a day, T-5's for 10hrs a day, and two 250watt halides for 6hrs a day running pheonix bulbs. I have several corals that have grown to the serface, but they don't grow out of the water. They grow to the top and then mushroom out.

I took this last night. It is not the best representaion but I think the picture came out ok. I am redoing the left side of the tank. I cut the XL purple haze to give room to some more exciting corals. I made a shelf about half way down the tank bellow the purple haze and want to put either some LPS or encrusting montis.

Craig,

Just wondering if I misread you....I think you stated Phoenix bulbs at 18 months old still good. Have you checked their output recently or do you think the tables are pretty high and getting adequate coverage? Just wondering as I run mine on mag bal. and don't get near the life.

sixtygallon212
03/12/2010, 10:12 AM
I replaced them at about 20 months. I use Icecap ballasts and they run for 6 hours a day. When I had Aqua Medic magnetic ballasts the bulbs lasted about half as long.

"cecilturtle Craig- good to know, thanks. BTW, your tank is beautiful. "
Thanks!

The bulb combo I use is 12hrs of 2x coralife actinic T12 non VHO, 8hrs of 1x 03 blue and 1x 460nm hamilton T5, and 6hrs of pheonix 15K powered by icecap ballasts. I never have ran just the halides but I love these bulbs and I think they would look great. I also like the megachrome 20k bulbs if you don't have any other lights.

Sorry for the long wait on the replies, I have been busy and haven't been on RC for a while. Their are more pictures on aquariumsciencesb.com and I will try and take some new ones for everyone soon! The tank has grown out significantly more. I almost wish that the corals grew a little slower because every week I am having to alter the tank by cutting chunks of coral off. Thank you to everyone that has commented on my tank, I really appreciate it.:fun4:
