I'm helping a guy out with his tank. When I went to replace his 400w HQI bulbs, The new ones didn't fit. The old ones are 2 inches longer than the new "standard" sized ones. I've called a few fish stores and they couldn't help me out.

Does anyone know where I can get longer bulbs?

Are you 100% positive they aren't 250w or something like that?

The 400-watt HQI Double-Ended (DE) lamps are available in 2 different lengths. Some fixtures have additional socket mounting holes so both lamp lengths can be used. IceCap 400-watt DE lamps are longer than Coralvue 400-watt DE lamps.

100% sure they both are 400w

I know a difference of a couple of mm is common in HQI bulbs, but this bulb is full a 2 inches longer that a 400w IceCap bulb. I'm looking right at the bulbs.

I think I'm just going to mod the reflector for the shorter bulbs since he already bought the new bulbs, and the older longer bulb seems to be of inferior quality than the IceCaps he ordered in as replacements.

Icecap must have changed suppliers. The Icecap lamps used to be the longer ones. The 2 different length lamps have slightly different electrical specs but if used on an electronic ballast it makes no difference.

I am fairly sure, most DE HQI bulbs are 8 inches long

Fc2 base DE lamps come in 3 sizes:

250-watt: 6.4”

400-watt: 8.11” (4 amp lamp current spec)

400-watt: 10” (3.2-3.5 lamp current spec)
