My EuroReef RS-80 has been working well but over the years (2) has been getting louder and louder. I think the needlewheel impeller assembly is old and worn. I just want to replace the whole thing with a new quiet and efficient skimmer. The Sedra 3500 also puts out too much heat for my small tank, 70G with 20L sump/refugium 2/3rd filled. Two options I've read about are Tunze DOC 9010 and BubbleKing Mini 160. The latter being much more $$$ but from what I've read worth it.

Anyone have opinions or other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

The BK's are quite but yeah I was going to say the new Tunze Skimmers with the improved "hydrofoamer" pump . They are suppose to be pretty quite .

Sicce pumps are quite when using a needle wheel but for some reason their volume can change from pump to pump.

There is however someone on the trading forums selling a bk mini 160 for 575 which is a decent deal .

Thanks for the suggestion. That BK was sold rather quickly. I think I'll take my chances with a BM150 from Bubble Magnus. According to the Bubble Magnus club, its pretty quiet, efficient with kill a watt measurements of 21watts and its a pretty good skimmate puller.

Well the main issue with those is the necks diameter it is very small , Thats the main complaint of the actual design of the skimmer ( excluding the pump ) .

Since Bubble mag can have some bad support if you order through ebay try purchasing it through Nuocean i believe they are the retail dist of those skimmers for the states.

I think the 2nd gen BM150 comes with a wider neck. I'm not sure though how much wider is over the 1st gens but its suppose to be a lot better design.
I also think you should by from Nuocean just for ease of warranty and replace parts if you ever need them.

Is there a reason why you don't want to replace the parts? That's what I'd do.. certainly much cheaper that way.

Its not performing as well as I'd like it to and I'm looking for one with less heat output that can do more work. I have a very steady water level with my ATO and I've tuned the foam as best that I could with the air valve and water discharge but its not working as well as I like. I get either wet foam or dry green gunk on the neck. I've had it for 2.5 years now and its been in constant operation and could use a break. I would put ER into my 20G tub with cooking rocks.

Here is a very old pic.

Ive never really been happy with my rs-80. Ive done the mesh mod which has made the bubbles smaller. But on a whole Im not happy.

Now that the new bubble king cones are coming out. In all sizes look up the small one. RE Cone 170 I think. Im thinking about buying that bad boy too. Its only 650. That is a lot of money. But for bubbleking quality it cant be beat.
