I would like to make two acrylic acylic tanks with the dimentions of 6" wide and long, and 12" deep. How thick should the acrylic I use be?

Thanks.

1/4" will be fine use cast acrylic like acrylite gp or plexiglass "G"

1/4" cast acrylic , run 1" strips around the top, just for incase, or rimless. If worried, use 3/8", but I doubt that is necessary. . Do not use 1/8" no substance to it. (Extruded acrylic is not recommended for use with water, so that leaves home depot out.)

what are you planning on doing with those tanks? I only ask, because it is an out of the ordinary dimension.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. The tanks will be used as "display" type tanks, hooked Up to my 40 gallon. One of them will contain mangroves, and the other will have a specialized wetland "filter" (that as far as I know nobody else has done before...) The wetland filter will simply hold a 6x6x12 in block of grasses cut strait out of a wetland I know of in Delaware.

Thats why the dimensions are so weird, because I want t get enough of the grasses root system to have them survive. Then I figured that if I am going to build one, then why not two... :)

With wetlands, are you referring to an Estuary? Very interesting eco-system. Was gone into in depth in my Marine Bio courses. (way back when) --- did a lot of playing in the mud.

Here's a calculator for recommended glass/acrylic thickness and cuts... http://www.garf.org/tank/buildtank.asp

Yes, I was referring to estuaries. And they are the true "filters of the ocean." I took a marine bio summer course at Delaware University. And we did a lot of work in the estuaries and in that work I found out that the root systems on those grasses go VERY deep.

Thanks truebeliever. I checked GARF at first, but to double check the acrylic thickness I would need I put in a 1x1x1 inch tank, and it still says to use 1/4 inch acrylic. So I figured I would check that with you guys first.

For the size of the tank 1/4 inch would be more then sufficient.

Marine Bio gives a huge head start and great advantage in this reef keeping endeavor. Some people think it is just playing with fish-- the Marine Bio courses.
