I'm curious to see what kinds of Bio-Media I could use for a DIY Biological Filter, or considering a DIY Pressurized Filter. Haven't decided yet, but I've gotten several ideas for what could be used for a cheap substitute for Bio-Media.

This is most likely going to be used for a Freshwater Setup.

-Ribbon
-Sponges
-Bath Sponge (Pot Scrubbers)
-PVC Pipes

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks,

Go Oscar Go

I have used pot scrubbers from big lots. Cheap and effective. I pulled one apart just to see , and there is an impressive amount of fabric/surface area.

I've heard of a LOT of Positive Feedback on the Pot Scrubbers.

I would suggest building one of these: http://www.aquariumlife.net/projects/diy-filter/10.asp

Sand has the most surface area of any biological media. The ratio of surface area to volume is about 1000 sq. cm. :1 cc. IIRC

I dumped several bags of lavarock in a sump under my planted tank. Cheap at every garden center in America and a fair source of Fe for plants. BWDIK?

I used the nylon pot scrubbers from the dollar store... lots of real estate for bacteria.

It looks to me that I will be using the Pot Scrubbers.

Thanks Guys!
