Ok so my brown stripped brittle sea star started exuding this milky white "stuff" out of his body the other night. He got right up on the surface of the water by the overflow box and just went to town.
Made the tank extrmely cloudy. Is that waste of some sort or is he trying to 'breed'? There are no other start fish in the tank, so what's his dealio...

Sounds like a spawn. They don't care if another is around or who is watching!

+1. the one thing you might want to do is a waterchange. dilute that as much as possible.

Oh man.. Ihad just done a 12% water change and he spewed shortly after that... Geesh....
So I take it that means he's happy, but the tank will now not be happ... Is it polluted so to speak?

Stress can sometimes cause a spawn reaction also. Is you water change water thoroughly mixed?

Yes my water change water is thoroughly mixed. I've always done it the same way for the last 18 months and he's never done this.... It was quite odd to watch, Imust say!
So I won't worry about it then.
I won't be able to do a water change for a couple of days though, so I hope that everything will hang in there until I can do it!

Set your skimmer a little wet and it should get most of it.

it's believed that waterchanges trigger this event.

really? you think so? Hmmm.. Well I cna't argue with you since Ihave zero data, LOL! But it seems just anecdotally, that, that can't be.... I've changed the water every week for 18 months and he's never done that before. Unless of course he's doing it at night when no one is watching... Hmmm..........

wow--a masterbating star fish---oh well boys will be boys:eek2:

another good reason for running carbon 24/7 :) Carbon does wonders on reducing coral toxins from leathers also---some that are invisible in the water but can affect the growth of other corals in the tank

Yeah those boys I'm tellin' ya... Naughty creatures!

I do run carbon 24/7, though I run it passively. I will have to get a reactor at some point for the new tank....

Capn,
Whats the deal? vibrating beds, masterbating.... something your not telling us?? :D

Yeah me neither... ( No data that is :)
But it's as good a theory as any :D

Larah you have been promising that for over a year;)
next to a water change a carbon reactor can be your best ally in a tank poison happening
