I really like my Envison 500 tank. Just take your time cleaning it and get the right tools for the job! :)

I have three acrylic tanks and love them. Scratch kits remove scratches. Takes a bit of elbow grease, but really not a big problem. But mine were custom made, not made by the edited vendor.

Actually, I think the edited vendor abused the Reef Central Rules and is now edited out.

I like my acrylic tank. I'm on my third acrylic. I just won't ever pair one with a trigger again, though. I had a clown trigger in an acrylic tank and it would go back and forth with it's teeth scratching the front.

There's already too much to worry about with a reef to then have to worry about scratching the acrylic as well. I suppose it is possible to take real good care of acrylic, but really, one bump of a rock here, one sand grain caught there, one neurotic clown trigger, etc to the power of etc. It's just not the most appropriate material for viewing hard, often jagged, and occasionally moving things.

A reef is supposed to get better with age. An acrylic tank does not.

Well, scratch your glass tank (not that hard to do) and you are SOL. You can't remove that scratch.

I like my acrylic tank. Its custom made not the vendor mentioned though. On a smaller tank I think its personal choice... I would personally go sapphire glass on a 180 or smaller. Once you get to a larger tank though the weight, and more importantly the increase chance of a seam burst is just to scary for me.

Oh and the clarity is unbelievable. Scratches are just a fact of life with an acrylic tank. You live with them till you can't anymore, then you buff them out :)

I was an acrylic tank man for many many years...no more though. I have now switched over to Starphire glass. Acrylic is nice but you will scratch it no matter how careful you are. Yes glass will scratch also but not as easily. And, starphire galss is just as clear, if not clearer, than acrylic !! I will never go back to acrylic..Of course, if you are going with a massive huge tank acrylic would be the only feasible choice , unless you have the glass tank assembled on site.

If you put an acrylic tank next to a starphire you will see that acrylic is still 'clearer'.

I really like my custom 125 acrylic. I mostly went that route because I read too many threads of glass seams/cracks/leaks/droppped a rock etc. I know some people have had them for many years, but... that was my main reason for the acrylic choice. Can't speak for the vendor, but in general, they are good and just require a bit more care in cleaning but you get a stronger, lighter, clearer tank.

I disagree Noahm, I believe Starphire is clearer..

Is there a way to buff scratches out without taking the tank apart, any way to do it under water with livestock in it?

Actually, scratching glass is much harder. Quite literally. The scientific "hardness" of glass makes it far more resistant and durable. Really, it's no contest.

I've also heard acrylic can discolor over time, turning yellowish. Can anyone confirm this?

JRF

The acrylics used these days do not turn yellow..

virginiadiver69 - I know you are considering T E N E C O R , but have you looked into Acrylic Tank Manufacturing in Las Vegas? I think the web site is www. acrylicaqauriums.com
I have had tanks from both T and ATM and ATM makes the better acrylic tank by far...but they may be a bit more $$..

With acrylic, no problem.

Well, scratch your glass tank (not that hard to do) and you are SOL. You can't remove that scratch. cerium oxide removes scratches from glass. I'm using it on a 125 that I got for free because of scratches. by the time I'm done with it it will be scratch free.

Alternative, Hybrid acrylic/glass. Acrylic back and sides, PVC bottom, Starphire front pane. AGE has made a few of them, and they're awsome. Very pricey though. The one I've seen with my own eye's is a 650 gal. display.

how do you remove the inner scratchs without removing live stock?

redfishsc

I have one glass and one acrylic tank.

The acrylic tank always looks cleaner, and clearer. But it's taking on more scratches than the glass tank does.

Personally, with the cost involved, I would go glass. But that's just my miserly tendencies. If I were getting an acrylic tank, I'd get it from glasscages.com

You might be able to remove scratches inside any acrylic tank with Micro-Mesh abrasive pads.

Would take a while though.......
