View Full Version : Finally tried out the wave feature on my Vortechs!

All I can say is SWEET!

I had one Vortech in my 225 mostly for the battery back up feature. I bought a second Vortech about two months ago. I had them on both ends of the tank pointed at each other. I set them on full blast. Tons of flow in my tank, no complaints.

Well I had some time on my hands today. I decided to try out the short pulse mode on anti-sync. I little confusing at first but I got the hang of it. My Vortechs are dialed in and producing an 1.5" wave on a 6' long tank. Saaawweeeeeeet!!!!!

It's definetly worth trying out I had a sick wave on my old tank with just one vortech

No splash when it hits the wall... (sooooo jealous!)

No doubt love my MP40w.

does the wave feature ever create overflow

Not on my tank, but it could. Enough Vortechs on a small rimless tank would throw water all over the place.

I love the Vortech too. I had a buddy bring his old one over so we could up grade it off of mine, and for grins we put both in my 40 breeder :eek2: holy cow!! That was cool. I will stick with one on the 40 for now though:lol:

I purchased two MP40Ws in order to create the wave effect on my 6' long tank. The wave was cool at first but I much preferred the Reef Crest Random Mode. It just provided more turbulent flow for my critters.

short pulse setting making a wave is cool but i cant stand the rhythmic noise it creates... i run mine on lagoon at around 70% supplemented by my return coming through a 1" sea swirl on my 75g

wow. I’m jealous as well... one day I will own some.... one day:D

I love having mine on short pulse. I get 5" wave in my 75 gallon, and if I lower the water level, the wave gets even crazier!

Just upgraded my Mp20 to the Mp40w in my 50g! WOWSERS talk about flow. I like reefcrest the best right now...

I havn't tried short pulse with the new Mp40w, I'm sure I could spill water out of my 50g. :)

Well worth the price tag, IMO.

so jealous. I'm waiting for the MP10 for my 16 gallon!

Update:

I'm hanging out in my office after hours. Super quiet in here right now. Skimmer and cooling fans are off. All I hear is the on off on off on off on off on off on off on off on off of my Vortechs. With the fans and skimmer on I didn't notice the sound too much. This would be ridiculously annoying in my bed room. I think I'll leave em on for the time being though. Rarely am I at my office at 8:30 pm in dead silence.

mine is set up about 6 feet from my recliner... the noise drove me crazy... tha saving grace for me was lagoon mode... now i rarely hear the pump at all

I leave my MP20 on short pulse in my 46G, I don't feel like I get the water column movement necessary with reefcrest which surprised me quite a bit. I was expecting significantly more power, I don't know how people get away with MP20's on anything larger than a 40BR.

You know you can't post a thread like this without a vid right? :D I'm thinking about putting two on my 180. Can't wait.

I'll work on a vid in the AM. Lights are off and I'm ready to head home.

+1 VorTech's are awesome... I wish you could alternate modes throughout the day too. I love the short pulse, but feel like I'm missing out by not using ReefCrest. I would love to be able to have the VorTech go in and out of different modes so I could utilize them all.

Here's my MP40w in a 20 long (had to dial it WAY down)... and as someone mentioned on my thread... the most confused float switch ever.

(will16 has a great video too)

I was about to say that float switch must be going crazy. That thing must be on the slowest speed for a 20 gallon.

I may be doing a 180g local species build for a local musium (marine musium) and I'm gusing that 2 MP40's would be needed, is this correct? Or can you get away with just one in a 180 (with 2 sea swirls)?

I would never consider spending that much on a fancy powerhead.

Awesome video Twisty.

If you had a Vortech you would think differently about it Juruense.

I said the same thing about them for a long time, then I got one. Now I will never run another tank with out one.

Gentlemen, is there a big difference between the waves generated by the two different pulse modes?

Short Pulse Mode: Allows for wave pulse timings between 0.3 and two seconds, enabling the creation of FAST alternating flow throughout the tank.

Long Pulse Mode: Allows for wave pulse timings of between two seconds and 60 seconds, enabling the creation of slow alternating flow throughout the tank.

Or, his savings....:D I love my powerheads but, I recently did a quick calculation of how much money i've spent on Tunzes and Vortechs and, I wish I'd built a Carlson surge device instead. That being said I would not trade or sell my pumps, but if they broke down I'd probably replace them with a CSD.

I love my vortechs, but nothing makes a wave like a tunze box. I mean nothing. It'll do all that the carlson box will without all the plumbing and salt creep.

The reef crest mode is so quiet I thought it wasn't working. I put my ear to the pump and heard it slowly going up and down in speeds.

I would like to get a second to replace two other powerheads.
