View Full Version : Using hot/very warm water through a RO/DI.

I live in the Phoenix Arizona area. My plumbing for my house runs through my attic where it gets around 160+ degrees in the summer. When I turn on my tap, I have to wait for the cooler water to make its way through the pipes.

So the question is,,, what about the hot/very warm water?
How does that react with the membranes?

I heard it trashed them if the water is too hot when you operate the RO/DI. I do have the pipes insulated but that only goes so far.

Hot water is not good for membrane life.

i'd let it run a while to cool off before putting it through the unit. my water starts off pretty warm here in FL as well, and i always let it run a bit before starting up the rodi.

Using hot water is a fast way to ruin your membrane. If your water main runs through the attic and that's the only source than your best bet is like what dwd5813 said. But I would be worried that the slow flow through the plumbing is just going to heat the piping and water back up. I would run the RODI during the cooler nights during the summer months. I wonder if there is a way to chill the plumbing before it gets to the RODI.
EDIT: I should say an “efficient” way to cool the plumbing

If you turn on the nearest cold faucet for a couple of minutes wouldn't it purge the cold line for you?

That was my only other real option was to run it on a timer or something during the early hours of the morning. I'm going to collect the water in a barrel. I'm starting a new 75 gallon tank so maybe a 20 gallon weekly water change should do the trick. I'm guessing it shouldn't take too long to get 20 gallons through a RO/DI?

That depends on your unit. I get about 20 gal in 5 hours on my 90 gpd unit.

6-7 hours give or take. I get 15 gal in 5 hours.

Nope, sure ain't. Over 115F the glue holding the material melts and destroys the membrane very quickly...
