Ok. Here is the low down. I am going to buy a better skimmer in the very near future i already have a skimmer but a CRAPPY one its a bak pak 2 with the airstone and mesh mod. Here are my current options from aquacave.com. I have a 75 gallon tank but hopefully will soon upgrade to a 120 or 125. These are the prices cuz they have free shipping over $175

1. Turboflotor Multi SL Protein Skimmer (25-250 gallons) - $237.45
OR
2. Reef Octopus Extreme 160 Protein Skimmer (25-160 gallons) - $284.95

I have heard from you guys that the Octopus Extreme skimmers are good but ive heard the regular octopus skimmers are JUNK. Also it doesnt matter if the skimmer is an internal or external cuz im gonna build a 30 gallon sump/refugium also in the near future. If you have any other recommendations on other skimmers please by all means let me hear it..

MSX160 for $270 and it comes with a better pinwheel than the Octopus 160. Good customer service too.

AFAIK, MS has free shipping with a code on the MSX skimmers. You wont have to spend another $40 for a good pinwheel. It comes with it.

And I can easily post up tons of posts of the well known poor support from Coralvue and several of the vendors including loud pump issues and they would be very recent, not from 2008. MS has excellent support. All you need to do is go to the forum and check it out. There are posts from many owners there on the great support they've received.

I can easily dig up a bunch of negative posts about support from Tunze and Premium Aquatics and they have the best support in the business.

Xler8n, you can buy an Octo160 for $270 and then spend another $40 for a new ATB or MSX PW with shipping or get an MSX160 for $270 with a good PW at no extra cost. Just wanted you to be informed of the difference between the two products if you go that direction.

 You should change your name to MSX-Scott.

I don't care if you just bought a Alpha cone....

Mike, I merely posted about the differences between the two skimmers to inform the poster. Do I honestly think the MSX is a better product for the $$? Yes, I do and for the reason I stated. I dont really care who makes it. Why do you feel the need to resort to mud slinging?

I own a Turboflotor. Dealt with that p.o.s. for 9 months until I broke down & bought a MSX-200. The difference is night & day. The build quality alone is much better with the MSX. You also get new technology, a pinweel & a mesh wheel.

I am very happy with MSX Skimmer. Jeff was very helpful answering any questions I had & shipping was extremely fast & free.

I would get the MSX over the octo X too. BEtter pinwheel. I have owned the 160 and 200 in the octoX and hte 160 and 200 msx. Same skimmer different pinwheel and reducer.
I would buy the msx. The best mesh job I feel comes from reefspecialty. but I would rather have the better pinwheel

So here is what I want to know... What if any difference is there between the two?

Everything looks the same to me.

Nothing. Marine Solutions sells the SWC skimmers.

AFAIK, it works like this
Honya China makes the skimmer bodies
SWC and Coralvue import them
SWC and Coralvue supply modified Sicce pumps
SWC sells direct and there are a couple of US vendors, MS being the primary
The Coralvue skimmers are sold under the Octopus brand.

Under $300. Remeber its for a 75 gallon tank with a soon to be 30 gallon sump. I was thinking of........

A) Turboflotor Multi SL - $237.45
B) Reef Octopus Extreme - $284.95
C) MSX 160 - $284.39

Also sum1 told me to just buy the MSX200 for $15 but dont u think that will be ocerkill on my 75. I mean it rated at 230 gallons on medium bioload. Also dont the octo extreme skimmers come with a siccie pump also. So its Octo Xtreme Vs. the MSX 160 or 200. What is the difference.

MSX 160 is a great skimmer. Nothing wrong with white. Same skimmer.

The 200 wouldn't be overkill, if you could fit it then thats what I would go with due to the extra contact time between bubbles and the water. Plus if you upgrade to a larger tank you already have a skimmer that sucks the poop right out of the fish.

If you can hack it get the Octo Extreme 200 since u mentioned upgrading to a 120 down the road. I have a buddy using one and it has blown me away.
