I have a 75G (48x18x20) with about a 4-5 inch sand bed.

Over that I have 440W of VHO (2 actinic 2 10k daylight). The bulbs are about 8 inches over the water, so from the top of the sand to the bulbs is about 23 inches or so.

Clams yes or clams no?

I have a Squamy clam, originally he was in a 29gallon with 135 watts of PC lighting. His mantle extension has been 2 inches in every direction with that and he's grown 1 inch in shell size.

I've since added another 100 watts of PC lights and his growth has increased in speed.

Grab a Squamy and give it a try. I think your lights are good.

Usually I recommend against adding clams to tanks without MH.
Bleeching in clams is more serious than in corals and it is more difficult for clams to recover from partial bleeching. I would try either a squamosa or derasa and make sure you have a friend or LFS that has MH that can take the clam if you notice any bleeching. IMO it is important to improve the lighting as soon as you see any signs of bleeching.

I agree - go for squamosa! I see you are in Pittsburgh - Eastcoastclams.com has some killer squamosas, and they are in West Mifflin! No shipping! (I have picked up from him before - great guy!)
