Anybody have any opinions on this bulb? I have run 150w Radium 20K and Helios 250w 20k and now want to try the AB 20K

Very expensive bulb. Probably why not that many people have experience with them. I was in a tread with some one who does. I will see if I can find it. I think GSMguy started a thread on his new bulb choice and someone chimed in with that option.

I have personally have seen a 150 watt, very light blue, more to the white, but the thing I liked was that all colors (LPS-SPS) and yes there was a few SPS, it was a Solana set-up, stayed very true in color. The bulb never really favored anyone color, that was the thing we noticed, it's not a real "pop" type of bulb but more of all the corals looked good. Here is a pic of his Hot Chilli or whatever, and it will give you some kind of idea. Ya I know it's a 150 watt, but it's the best I can do to give you some kind of idea.

Are they or are they not the same bulb as the Ushio/BLV rebadged and marked up almost 2 fold? I've heard at least a few say they are the exact same bulb.

In that same thread I beleive someone mentioned that the Ushio 20K's are the same bulb as the AB......for alot less money.

Okay, so the par is similar but what about the color?

You are looking at the spectral graph which IS what determines the color ... the two bulbs are almost identical spectrally. The differences are easily small enough to be accounted for by manufacturing tolerances between lamps.

I love the ushio 20k but if your looking for super blue color go with xm 20k or Helios 20k or pheonix.

The ushio 20k brings out colors that are not there under pheonix bulbs

I agree 100%. The Ushio 20K is a fantastic lamp but not nearly the bluest ... and they wont wash out some colors like the Phoenix and some of the bluer lamps can.

Okay, so I am in the process of "burning in" my 250w 20K AB, I was running the Helios 20k and I cannot believe how monochromatic that bulb actually was...way too blue imho! the AB has a nice balanced crisp white/blue color with a decent pop of fluorescencese at this point, gonna see how it performs with the corals for a while before I pass total judgement, so far still getting use to the overall look compared to the Helios I was previously running

that graph in the link is the color spectrum graph of both. they are identicle! the BLV overlaps the AB so well it probably looked like one graph to you. And to think I was considering the AB bulb but was cheap and "settled" for the ushio. turns out I got the same damn thing for almost half the price.

To make you feel even better ... I had an AB 20K to compare with the Ushio. The AB had a couple more months use. Side by side I couldnt see a difference between the Ushio 20K and the AB 20K .... 250 watt DE versions on M80 ballast. Im personally convinced that they are the same lamp and I would personally not even consider spending the extra on the AB ... but I dont know that to be 100% the case, for a fact.

well, I should have done more homework before dishing out the money for the AB 20K, I could have saved a few bucks...truth be told I do like this bulb a lot, it has a nice crisp white/purple/blue and overall I am rather pleased with it!

They are nice bulbs and again, whether or not they are exactly the same as the Ushio is not known to be fact, atleast not from anything I have read or heard. I dont know if they are made in the same facility or if they are made to the same specs but in different plants. But in Sanjays testing of the two bulbs, Ushio and AB, there are no apparent differences that couldnt be easily attributed to very small manufacturing tolerances between two of the lamps. And from running both side by side, I couldnt visually see any difference at all (I borrowed the AB lamp just to check out for my curiosity).

So when it comes to bulb changing time, if you decide you want to stay with the same lamps, you could consider the Ushio and then decide for yourself. If they are the same to your eye as well ... Live and learn, all part of life. No big deal.
