I was checking over my tank today and noticed that there was a larger gap between the glass and the bottom frame of the tank on the back than on the front of the tank. See image below. It makes me nervous but I am not sure if it was there before or not. What do you think? By the way the stand is off level by about 1/8" to 1/4".

This is the gap

Other that being a PITA for salt creep and dust, it shouldn't be an issue.

What usually happens when tanks start to go bad? Do you usually just get a seam that fails and water slowly seeps out or is it like in my head where the entire front glass just busts and water goes flying all over my family room?

Thanks,
Josh

If the plastic rim is not cracked then it's likely just how it was siliconed to the glass.

Nah, that looks fine. The frame isn't meant to support deflection in that direction.

I'm pretty certain this is a sign that you need to upgrade to a 300 gallon. Do not rationalize, just buy it.

How big an issues is it if the plastic is cracked? Wake up to a marine swimming pool in my room?

Depends if the plastic bracing was used for visual appearance only, or if it actually had some structural bracing. Typically the band going around the top and bottom is just appearance. Any bracing going across the tank on bottom or top can be actual bracing that supports the tank.

The brace on the top of my tank was cracked so I replaced it about 2 weeks ago. Major pain in the ***, especially with a half full tank.

all manufactured tanks have to have some tolerance and thats what your seeing ,no worries mate !

Not a problem at all. Most likely that way from day one. It'd be an easy fix to seal all around bottom frame with black silicone to control salt creep.
It's important that stand be flat on top and not causing tank to twist, but slightly out of level should not be an issue.

If your that worried about it just get some aquarium silicone and fill the seam;)

Looking at the wear on the trim and the amount of dust and salt creep in there, it looks like the tank has a few miles on it. I would not worry about it, it has probably been like that since day one you are just noticing it now.

I bought it used and am not sure of the age. I checked the prices of a 180 Reef Ready from Aqueon and lets just say I better start saving up. Might even go oceanic 180 Reef Ready if I can.
