well after sadly selling my last peacock and tank i finally got the wife to let me setup another tank. now this was just supposed to be a frag tank but i have changed those plans and it will now be a mantis/frag tank! soon it will be set up long enough for my taste and a lucky mantis will have a new home. only thing i am going to change is how the frag rack sits in the tank. i dont like the way it looks now and might remake another rack abit smaller so i can sit it diferently.

Cool. The rack to the left is pretty space inefficient, though.

micstarz, yea i am getting ready to change that out with something else. i dont like the design of it and it takes up too much room.

nikesb4l, actually i am probably putting a peacock in this tank. not sure yet but i have had plenty of mantis in the past under halides including a peacock. the light is only a 175W btw

thanks all, the more i look at the pictures the more hate that frag rack design....gotta rip it out and think of something different.... anybody got some ideas to make it more efficient?

if you want a frag rack, i'd place it at the top of the water column, like an underwater lid. that way, the frags get maximum light. it would have low profile when viewed from the side, and could be a barrier of sorts for a larger stomatopod.

You could just place a pile of LR under there, though :P

the whole lid idea wouldnt really work for this tank. if this was a taller tank then maybe. but this is a rather short tank, that is actually the reason i am using it for a frag tank. maximum light penetration.... also that would leave much room for the mantis to move around and hunt, or the fish to swim.

i had though about the live rock idea under the frag rack. maybe putting its burrow under the frag rack and making them a 1 piece design..... kinda sound like a good idea. guess im back to the drawing board to find a better design.

thanks for the import my fellow mantis heads!

I drew up a suggestion for you...since the frags want light, why not have an elevated egg crate platform near the surface above a stack of live rock with the mantis burrow? I'd suspend the egg crate by tying some string to the egg crate and clipping the other end to the side of the tank or silicone it in place...

That way you could possibly have a small CUC in the frag section that wouldn't get killed so easily.
