I am looking into setting up a saltwater tank and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to save some money with putting live rock in it. I don't know if it would be worth it or not to buy a few pounds of cured rock and a few pounds of rock that has not been cured to put in a new tank? Or if I should buy all cured rock? Where is a good place to buy some rock that would work? I am thinking about setting up a 30 gallon tank.

You can use a mix of live and "dead" rock, it may take a bit longer to cycle, but it is fine to use a combination of dead and live rock when starting a tank.

if you are looking into saving, use lace rock as your base rock and throw som elive overit....give it a couple of months, and it will become "alive".

Do you have any recommendations where to buy dead rock?

You can buy dead rock at a few good places. Such as, Bulk Reef supply or Marco Rocks. Good place to buy your live rock is Yourreef.com. Hope this helps. Anyway a few places to start with.

My friend said to use marco rock. It is a lot cheaper. He got it for $2 a lb shipped. Looks nice too. He actually got it from a seller on ebay.

Also you can check the forum to see if anyone is selling their rock or even craigslist.

craigslist is freakin awesome for salt water stuff.

bought a 2 year old 75 gallon tank for $180. It came with a skimmer, nice prefab sump, 2 pumps, RR tank, current 48" 4 bulb PC lighting, and about 80-90lbs of live rock. it was some NICE rock too. lots of coraline and tons of holes, pretty sure it was some really mature fiji.

i just bought it for the live rock. sold the rest on craigslist for a profit :)

I bought the Eco rock from bulk reef and it's great. Pretty light with nice holes.
