55 Gallon upgrade

Hello everyone. I'm planning on upgrading my 55 fresh tank to a reef tank. Here is my current lighting and equipment list

Sea Clone Protien Skimmer(will replace later on)
2x54 watt T5(need new bulbs)
2x1200 maxijets (still need to get these)

and thats about it. I'm debating on putting an overflow on this tank or not. I have a 20l I can use for a sump but I'm not sure how well an HOB overflow will work. I'm debating on just getting a canister filter and running no sump in this tank.
