Woo hoo Canon has announced the lens rebates and the best thing is the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is $200 off instead of $150 this time around. Check the Canon site for more details but the rebates go from May 3rd- July 11th.

Enjoy

I thought the 200 f/2 was $500 off.

The 70-200 f/2.8 was $200 off and I quickly placed my order for that. There is also a good chance I'll get the 85 f/1.2 before the end of the coupon period.

dendronepthya,
Sorry I was so excited about sharing the news that I wrote the wrong lens. I placed my order for the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM should have them by the end of the week. I am still pondering the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for landscapes on trips.

I have all 3 of those lenses, I LOVE my 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 IS and they go everywhere with me but I rarely use the 10-22.

Do you have to buy them from a particular vendor?

TitusvileSurfer,
That is what I am worried about with the 10-22. The only time I think I will be able to use it is on vacations so having a hard time convincing myself I "need it" verses "want it". I know the other two will get great use. I think I will research a single lens I can carry on vacation that offers some a decent range so I don't put a big target on my back.

panic,
I order from BH Photo the vendor has to be a verified Canon distributor. It's instant so the price is discounted before you even put it in your cart.

Awesome! Now i just need to decide between the 50/1.2 or the 85/1.2.

anyone use the 10-22 on a full sensor body? WHat is the field of view (too lazy to look it up (lol). Thoughts on it's sharpness (I'm sure the edges suffer) overall?

"Umm, fish?"

Love the 70-200. Love it. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

It's an EF-S... won't mount to FF. But nice lens, I used to own it.

The 10-22 will break your full sensor body. It would crack the mirror if you tried to mount it.

NightOwl, I don't use it much at all but I knew I wouldn't. This is why I didn't get one of the more expensive wide angles. Sometimes you have to measure just how band you want something. There are shots that just can't be done right without it....most can though.

Awesome! Now i just need to decide between the 50/1.2 or the 85/1.2.

That's a big decision for me as well. I eventually settled on the 85mm because it has legendary sharpness and is a better portrait lens. I love the 50mm focal length though, and that the lens is considerably smaller than either the 85 or 35 (that I currently have). In the end because I have the 35mm to take into low light situations there would be a bit too much of an overlap between the 35 and 50. The 85 though gives me something quite different.

Are you worried at all about the focus shift problems of the 50? It's probably not something I would notice, but would bother me in my sleep after paying $1300.

Actually, somebody HAS mounted their 10-22 on their FF with some very minor modifications to the lens. Of course...do this at your own risk but the pictures that came out of the camera actually came out surprisingly well. Several people have confirmed that this indeed does work.

Yeah, i'm aware of the focus shift problems that lens has but i was still thinking of buying it in spite of that flaw. I have a couple friends that have that lens and in the couple times i've used it i never saw the problem. Its just that the 50mm range is perfect for indoor shooting especially in low light. One of my friends also has the 85L and while that's an awesome lens as well and super sharp the focal length may be too long for indoors and for my shooting style.

I agree with your point though. If i had the 35L i probably would get the 85 instead of the 50....but i don't, hence my dilemma. Then again i could always get the 50/1.4 and the 85L but that would really be painful.

I think the 85L is the sexiest lens of all time! I vant it!

Just confirmed my new glass will be here on Thursday...woo hoo. I have been debating about the 10-22 or a flash the 580 EX II any thoughts? I have until July to decide.

TitusvileSurfer

It depends on what other lenses you have and what you are shooting but personally I would rather have the 580 EX II

nightOwl

I have only had the camera about 3 months so my lens line up it not that stellar yet. I have the kit lens 18-55mm, 100mm macro, and on Thursday 24-70mm and the 70-200mm. I don't have a particular thing I shot per say besides my tank. I just like to take photos of family and friends and my vacations. I have already exceeded my range of my point and shoot camera so if nothing else I can take similar shots. I am still up in the air on a flash as I hardly used one before but in the last few months I have realized they are more important that I gave them credit for.

TitusvileSurfer

I would prefer to use either the 24-70 or 70-200 for 95%+ of what I shoot. Actually I take that back. I would put a super telephoto in the 500mm+ range to good use. You know what would make the already great 24-70 even better than it already is though? A 580 EX II.

So (for my personal taste), the decision would be
A) Buy another lens in addition to the 4 I already have to cover 10-18mm.
B) Supplement my new 24-70, which is one of the greatest zoom lenses in the world, with one of the best flashes.

I dunno the flash just seems so much more useful than a 10-22, but that *is* just me. Maybe those 8mm (which is a lot) will be enough to mandate the 10-22.

You guys have a similar lens lineup as i do. I have both the 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8 IS and also the 100 macro. Also have the 17-40 and a couple other lenses but what you choose to have next is all dependent on your shooting style. I only use a flash as a last resort as my style i'm finding (especially with the 5D) is to crank up the ISO and use available light. I've used all these lenses on both my 20D and my 5D2 and they have their upsides and downsides when used on a crop body. On the 5D everything just fell into place perfectly. I was in the same dilemma as you. Get the 10-22 or get the 17-40? I am glad i got the 17-40 because once i got the FF body, the 17-40 was just stunning on it. Using a flash properly is not easily done. There is a steep learning curve and it takes alot of practice to use a flash and have your pictures come out like you didn't use a flash. (if you follow me). Have you considered buying a fast prime? Maybe even the 50/1.8?

MrSandman,
I eventually want to get to a FF and that is part of the issue I have with the 10-22. SO far the Rebel XSi is fine for right now. When I purchased my 100mm macro I also placed and order for the 50 f1.4 but a back order issue made me cancel the order for the 50f 1.4 I still plan on getting it :). Everything with DSLR has a learning curve which is the pain in the butt...lol. Between learning aperture, f stops, exposure and ISO I have enough to keep me busy...lol. One good thing is Canon lenses keep their value from what I have seen. I may just sell some more frags and get them both...lol.

I'm curious about this as well

The rebates are instant and should be reflected in the listed price. Most of the larger reputable vendors (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) have a note right on the product page that says something like 'rebate details', then mentions that the rebate is included in the price.

Some of them even go up in value, for example 35/1.4 and 200/1.8, since they are either not in production or constantly on back order. I'm trying to convince my wife that lenses are a better investment than the stock market :)

dendronepthya
05/07/2009, 09:10 AM
Unfortunately there is also the chance that the retail price can go up randomly. There is a big stink on some Canon forums about Adorama and B&H raising their prices significantly on lenses once the rebates were announced. I ordered my 70-200 2.8 IS and got it for $1499 after rebate. It is now $1599 after rebate from the same place and it's only been about 4 days.

BlueCorn
05/07/2009, 09:11 AM
Yeah - it depends on where the price started. B&H and Adorama normally sell below list price so there is some wiggle room.

Jacob D
05/07/2009, 09:49 AM
Yeah, I've noticed that too. B&H seems to have some wild price fluctuation from time to time (up and down over the course of a few days). Anyone shopping for a lens should know the going price, as long as you know that spotting a deal shouldn't be too difficult.

Jacob D,
That's good to know they can increase in value as well lol. Like you said it's all about knowing a deal when you see it. The price shift makes me want to stray away from them for my next purchase but their prices are always lower than most places to start with so I guess like beerguy says they have a little wiggle room.

dendronepthya,
It's kinda shady how they increased the prices. Adorama actually increased last week before the announcement...lol. I had been checking the prices everyday to see if it was going to happen. They are basically making the rebate only $100. I ordered mine the day I started this post and BH had not increased yet but when I just checked like you said they have gone up in price.

beerguy,
I would prefer they wiggle well in advance of the rebates so it just does not look so obvious. When Adorama raised their prices I knew it was only a matter of time before the rebates were coming out. Apparently they did the same thing last year as well :( and it was on a few of the photography forums :(.

Now I wait till 7:30 when I can go to UPS to pick up the new toys :).

nightOwl
05/07/2009, 06:21 PM
OK so I picked up my boxes and wow these things are heavy :). You can tell the difference in the kit lens and these for sure. The weight alone will make you think you have a real lens and not a toy. Now that these are in its off to rearrange the gear bag :). If nothing else I am going to look like a semi pro when shooting even if the pictures turn out like crap until I get the hang of it.
