I am confused at what kind of water test you are doing
Phosphates, nitrates or ammonia?
Is this test on the display tank water or ro/di water.

both are good methods but make sure you are holding them up in natural sunlight as in a window. Floreescent lighting can really make a difference on the colour tests.

I like to hold mine in front of the colour chart. I look for the two colours to appear as one and then I know the colours are the same.
