i am new to corals. i got a frag of star polyp just wondering how to add to tank and do i take it off the shell the frag is on now and do i put it on my live rock.

Star polyps will encrust onto your live rock as they grow. They grow very fast so you need to isolate that piece from the rest of your rocks or they will take over your tank.

how do isolate put in the sand

Just make sure that the rock that is is growing on is not touching your main rockwork or it will spread on to all of your rocks that are touching.
