I figured I would post this because I was amazed at how many critters came out of my x-men frag I just got.

If you can see, all those spots are things that crawled out. I couldn't get a good enough picture but there was even more than what you can see in the pic.

Remember to dip those new arrivals. :D

Most potential critter you'd get are

1) Zoa Eating Nudis
2) Sundial Snails
3) Spiders

bad that you don't want added to your main tank that doesn't pretain to polyps

Flatworms, especially Acro Eating Flat worms
Red Bugs
Isopods

I got them locally. He has been getting some really nice stuff this past month. I also got another single polyp of x-men from another store a few weeks ago. I'm noticing things come in waves to most of the stores around here.

I'm weary of anything online. Who knows what you actually get compared to a picture that can easily be altered and I can't justify paying that much for shipping. I'm fortunate to be near several good stores. I just play the waiting game to see what comes in.

Noob question- what do you dip them in? I'm moving in a couple months but don't want to add anything to my fish only tank until I do. Just trying to do some homework before the move. Thanks!

Lugol's
TMPCC

both forms of Iodine

Revive - plant extract

I use Kent Marine, Tech - D. It's an iodine dip solution for soft and stony corals.

+1 on Revive

I prefer TMPCC to Revive, but both work well enough... :)

Oh, and I use a bit of interceptor and Fluke Tabs on any SPS I add... ;)

CT- what's your mixture, as in amount of water, TMPCC, tablets of interceptor and fluke tabs ?

I mix one squirt of TMPCC to 2 liters of water, 1 drop of flatworm exit, and 1/8th of a tab of interceptor to anything new, before they go in the QT for a week. With zoas I also do a 3min FW dip, typically in pH buffered RODI and if I have enough, a MgCl dip to 35ppt.

Cool. I dipped my zoas and got a ton of crap like that off of it. Even a green brittle star.

Tincture can be had at any local CVS or Walgreens for about $1-2 and will do the same thing as the fancy named iodine dips. JMHO and good luck

Here is a link to a thread I made up for my local reef club on how I dip... (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1471986)

The same dip can be followed with zoanthids, using the interceptor for spiders/pods, and the fluke tabs for the nudis...

using the interceptor for spiders/pods

do you have proof that the interceptor kills spiders...i cant find anyone that has actually proven it. Just curious is all.

To be honest, it is just an assumption based upon the characteristics of spiders... Fortunately/Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to dip and find spiders... I know for a fact that interceptor is affective against different types of pods... Spiders are a type of arthropod. They are considered chlericerates instead of crustaceans due to their lack of defined antennae and jaws...

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-01/rs/index.php

That being said, I would not be surprised to find that interceptor is not affective against spiders... Spiders are small, but larger than most amphipods, isopods, redbugs, and other crustaceans I have found it affective against... I know that it is not as affective against some larger crustaceans... I have dosed with some shrimp and crabs that I could not catch and they still pulled through... But then again, I have had pistol shrimp and acrocrabs die which were about the same size as spiders...

The shrimp and crabs that made it were in a display where I was treating a whole system... I have never had anything make it through any of my "dips"... My theory is always that it is better to kill the coral than introduce a predator to my system, so I am very aggressive with my dips...

Bottom line is, it is always better to QT when applicable, but better safe than sorry when you can't... ;)

When I dosed for 100gal with Interceptor, I double or triple dosed. It took out ALL inverts in my tank including crabs ( emeralds / Pompoms/ some scarlet / blues ) snails I did find before I dosed. It also took out large peppermints ( and I mean Large ) and 2 LARGE 2 1/2 " or more scarlet cleaner shrimps.

if I was to dose the hole tank and i took out my shrimp and clean up crew and put them in a diffrent tank how long shoul i take befor putting them back in?
wouldnt this kill everything good and bad?
then i would have to keep my mandarin out becuse his food would be no more???
thank you for answering some of my off topic questions.

I have read that interceptor has a half life of about 12hours. Carbon should remove it, and skimming will also aid in allowing it to breakdown. I would believe that 24hours after dosing you should be fine, however, if it does work, I would suggest dosing it at least three times successively to make sure you kill everything including things that might not have hatched.

I will do a 25% water change after my last dosing of interceptor and then run GAC for 24 hrs before reintroducing any inverts or CUC...

I have never had a problem nor heard of anyone having a problem losing mandarins after treating with interceptor... Usually the pod population has time to recover before the mandarin suffers any ill affects... So long as your mandarin is healthy before hand, and you have adequate amounts of LR and/or a good refugium, you will likely be all right... :)
