Genicanthus takeuchii

This is one of the few Angelfish species, where I like the female/juvi pattern more than the Male's.

There is something in the works for these as we speak.

Very cool fish. Definitely Genicanthus Takeuchii.

If I remember correctly though, these guys prefer slightly cooler water.

I know about this too, and unfortunately it's illegal... there is no legal SCUBA collection in Ogasawara. This fish is not that uncommon or not even that deep relative to personatus. The reason we don't see them is because there is again no legal collection with SCUBA, and Ogasawara is slated also to be a World Heritage Site just like Lord Howe and other places. When poached fish do pop up they're insanely expensive... in the five figures...

These are a cool water fish... I spoke at length with Jack Randall and Rich Pyle (who described the fish) about these when I went through the fish collection at the Bishop Museum. Jack's tales of first finding this fish at Minami Torishima were quite exciting for an angel nut... The holotype specimen of this fish was in a HUGE jar and was the largest Genicanthus I've ever seen dead or alive... it stood out on the shelves and in my photos and at first glance looked like a striped bass! :)

So John, what is going to be the illegal part? They are going to say they collected the angels, under the pretense that they were free-diving or something?

I have no idea what they're going to say. Ogasawara is a national park. There is a reason this fish is not available in Japan on the open market. I believe they allow a regulated catch of some fish snorkelling in shallow water like Chaetodon daedalma (wrought iron butterfly). There is no collection with any breathing aides though, and up until now the national park has not allowed collection of this fish but for science...

The legal thing is what is being worked on at the moment. Yes it is illegal to collect fish in this national park and nothing will be done till it is legal...I assure you there will not be another clipperton/clarion issues from this.

I have a feeling just the trip itself will be more fulfilling than the catch.

Nice pattern, but the body shape reminds me too much of a large damselfish.
