I have a 3' 8 bulb tek light to put above a 90g tank.
How high above the water should I mount it?
Yes, I know its 3' over a 4' tank, but its tons of light and I feel it will be sufficient (as do others here..)
I may build a canopy or may just hang it, not sure yet, depends on height above water.
Thanks in advance.

I think this is one of those topics where you will find a variety of answers. I currently have a 6ft MH fixture thats ruffly 6-8 inches off the surface on my tank. Ive also seen lights as high as a foot or higher from the surface

Start high & lower as the corals get acclimated.

OK.
What about sheilding the lights from evaporation/salt? How do you handle that? find some glass to put right under the fixture?
I mean 6-8 inches above the surface is bound to get some salt coverage over time, ya?
My halides are 8 inches above the water and get very minimal salt spray. I have to clean the protective glass once a month at most.

it is true you can get away with mounting it a little higher than expected
